Spearheaded by internationally renowned Irish drummer Dave Hingerty, Side 4 Collective brings an eclectic array of Irish and international artists together, sculpting songs from scratch using Hingerty’s pre-written melodic and primal drum patterns. ‘You and Me (Against The World) features the additional writing, performing and production talents of Colm Quearney and Carol Keogh.

“I create drumbeats and record them. That’s how these Side 4 songs start. Each song on the album has different collaborators. Artists get in touch and I send them drumbeats. They choose a beat (or 3) and write music to them. The beats are weird enough, ranging from straight funk or rock feel creations to hypnotic percussion ensemble pieces, jazzy stuff, to afrobeat, to ‘Bone machine’ type oddities. Some are played through guitar pedals for weird effects. They have to be unique or they don’t pass the assembly line!

The only difference between ‘drum sample libraries’ that are available online and this collection of grooves, is that there is constant interaction between myself and the artist as we develop a song together. In some cases, the artist completes the music themselves, but most times they come out to the studio and we develop it. There is no guarantee that the song will be finished. The artist can also use it in their own releases. Uniquely, this is one of those rare situations where the drummer (or in this case the ‘first writer’, me) will get some songwriting royalties (20%).

This song was a joy to create. Combining Colm Quearney’s ( Lir, Dragonfly etc) and Carol Keogh’s ( The Plague Monkeys, The Tycho Brahe and solo project The Wicc’s debut album Wolf in 2022 and is releasing follow up Lycanthropy this autumn) songwriting gifts and unique voices, we felt we were onto a really good thing from the off! Add to this Anthony Gibney’s sound diligence and expertise and we had yet another unique Side 4 single release to be proud of. DAVE HINGERTY

Dave Hingerty is one of the most prominent drummers in Ireland. He has played on some of the biggest stages in the world and recorded with renowned artists such as Kila, Paul Brady, Bronagh Gallagher, The Frames, The Swell Season, Eddie Vedder, Josh Ritter, Jerry Fish and Mary Coughlan. Dave has also jammed with such luminaries as Chris Martin (Coldplay), Black Francis (The Pixies), Rosanne Cash, The Waterboys and The Corrs, as well as working with producers such as Steve Albini, Trevor Horn, and Dave Odlum. Dave has also exhibited in music and street photography, has a regular online blog ‘The Diary Of A Drummer’, produces Side 4 Collective and is a course designer and lecturer in BIMM University.
