Congratulations on your new EP Lisa. Your Ep “Foretaste,” represents a diverse blend of genres. Can you share the inspiration behind the title, and how does this collection of songs reflect your musical evolution?
Thank you so much! I named the EP ‘Foretaste’ because I wanted a sexy and uncommon word to describe the anticipation of who I am as an artist and to share samples of what types of music will be added to the full-length album.
Your musical journey has been nothing short of remarkable, from your memorable stint on The Voice to your recent releases. How has your experience on The Voice influenced your growth as an artist?
Working on The Voice was one of the best professional decisions I’ve made. Being around all the people from the coaches, vocal coaches, glam squad, the crew, and all the producers meant I was surrounded by success. The Voice makes 2 million an episode and I’m working with everyone involved. Opportunity was all around me and I love networking. I have many friends now from the show and have had insane performing opportunities (singing with John Legend at Madison Square Garden) that I wouldn’t have had if I didn’t do The Voice.
Your discography showcases elements of R&B, rock, reggae, and gospel. How do you navigate seamlessly between these diverse genres, and what draws you to experiment with such a wide range of musical styles?
Thank you for saying I navigate seamlessly between genres! It’s how I hear music. It’s a little all over the place because I am a little all over the place. Growing up I listened to funk, musical theater, gospel, R&B, soul, pop, pop rock, jazz, classical, Motown….literally everything. It’s difficult for me to stay in one genre lane so I created my own lane that suits me.
You mentioned that “Foretaste” is a sample of what’s to come. Can you glimpse your future projects, particularly the upcoming full-length album, and how “Better Than That” complements the EP?
Expect to be charmed. I’m in the business of making you feel good! The album will be full of music that makes your heart smile. ‘Better Than That’ to me was a great record that leaves you wanting more.
“Foretaste” allowed you to discover yourself as an artist without boundaries. How has this journey influenced your comfort with your artistic identity, and what can listeners expect from this newfound authenticity in your music?
The more I write, record, release, and play live the more comfortable I’ll get. I really lean into trusting the process. Authenticity and peace can be expected from my artistry. It’s wonderful to not have to chase what’s the most popular genre or style of music. I can just be me and create music that makes sense to me and makes me feel good. If you like my music I won’t have to chase you to stay relevant in your life. You’ll show up for me and I’ll be there for you
Your work has garnered attention from various publications and playlists. How do you feel about the recognition from press, radio, and platforms like Apple’s New Music Daily and Spotify playlists? How does it influence your artistic journey?
It feels incredible to be recognized. It shows that I take my career seriously and that I’m not here to mess around. It influences me to continue working hard, keep pushing, keep growing, and not take any shortcuts to achieve my goals.
As you continue to evolve as an artist, what message do you hope to leave with your fans through your music, and what legacy do you aspire to create with your musical career?
Freedom. I hope to set an example of freedom in all aspects of my life. Freedom to make my own decisions, write what I want to write, freedom to own my likeness, and freedom to make a profit from the music I write and release. Freedom. It takes ALL the hard work but in the end, I will live a peaceful life and answer to no one.
In addition to your studio releases, you’ve become known for your captivating live performances. How do you adapt your stage presence and energy to connect with your audience in both live and virtual settings?
It helps that there’s no place I’d rather be than on stage performing and it shows. Positive energy attracts positive energy and we all feed off each other. It’s an incredible feeling. Not as easy when I’m playing to a camera. I’ll shoot all this energy out at the camera but the camera just sucks it in and doesn’t give anything back. For me, I would pretend that I’m performing in a huge outdoor arena in Italy with thousands of people singing my original songs with me. It worked until my roommate’s cat would rub against my ankle forcing me back to reality and back into my living room.
