Askala Selassie’s latest single, “Welcome to Africa,” is a beautiful and powerful tribute to the spirit, warmth, and vibrancy of the African continent. At just under four minutes, the track takes listeners on a soulful journey, capturing the essence of what makes Africa so special through heartfelt lyrics, warm melodies, and a deep, roots-driven reggae rhythm.

Inspired by her life-changing trip to Cape Town, Askala’s connection to the land shines through in every line she sings. You can feel the sincerity in her voice as she paints vivid pictures of vast landscapes, welcoming smiles, bustling markets, and the unforgettable African sun. There’s a real sense that the song was not written in a studio but born from a genuine experience and an emotional awakening.

The production of “Welcome to Africa” is equally impressive. Askala worked with Grammy-winning producer Jazzwad Paul Yebuah at the UK’s Stingray Studio to build a rich foundation for the song. Yet it was Askala’s own instincts that led her to take it a step further. Not fully satisfied with the initial sound, she returned to the studio to add her own touch, producing new basslines, electric guitar layers, percussion, and backing vocals. This bold move resulted in a track that feels complete, alive, and full of soul. It also marks her first self-produced release, an important milestone in her career that shows her growth as a true artist.

The chorus is particularly striking, with Askala singing about “Azania,” the ancient name for South Africa, adding a deeper historical and cultural connection to the song’s message. It is clear that “Welcome to Africa” is more than just a personal reflection; it is a celebration of African identity, resilience, and beauty.

Askala’s vocals throughout the track are pure and captivating. Her tone is both soothing and strong, carrying a heartfelt emotion that resonates with listeners. There’s a beautiful balance between the vibrant rhythm of the reggae beat and the tenderness in her voice, creating a song that feels both uplifting and deeply moving at the same time.

“Welcome to Africa” is a standout track that showcases everything special about Askala Selassie. Her journey from South London to the stages of South Africa, her work with legends like The Wailers, and her passion for storytelling through music all come together in this powerful release. It is a song that not only invites you to experience Africa but also invites you to feel it.

In a time when much of music can feel overproduced or disconnected, Askala’s authenticity is refreshing. “Welcome to Africa” reminds us of music’s ability to connect, to inspire, and to transport. It is a song that leaves you not just humming along but feeling a part of something much bigger. Askala Selassie’s star continues to rise, and with songs like this, it is clear that her journey is just beginning.
