Some artists make electronic music for the dancefloor. Others use it to tell stories, preserve memories, and create emotional experiences that stay with listeners long after the music fades. SLAPPER belongs firmly in the second category. With more than two decades of experience behind the decks and in the studio, the Romanian producer has quietly built a body of work that proves electronic music doesn’t have to choose between energy and emotion. Instead, his music lives comfortably in both worlds, combining nostalgic melodies, cinematic synths, and modern production into songs that feel as uplifting as they are deeply personal.

Long before streaming platforms and social media reshaped the music industry, SLAPPER was already immersed in electronic music, performing as a DJ in some of Bucharest’s most respected clubs and learning firsthand what truly connects with an audience. Those years weren’t simply about reading a crowd or selecting the next record. They became the foundation of an artistic philosophy built on patience, atmosphere, and emotional storytelling. Every performance became a lesson in how music can bring people together, create unforgettable memories, and turn ordinary moments into extraordinary ones.

That philosophy has remained remarkably consistent throughout SLAPPER’s career. While electronic music has constantly reinvented itself over the years, he has never allowed trends to dictate his creative direction. Instead, he has chosen the more challenging path of staying true to his own artistic identity, refining his sound naturally while continuing to draw inspiration from the legendary artists who first ignited his passion for the genre. The result is a catalogue that feels timeless rather than fashionable, driven by authenticity instead of algorithms.

His latest single, “Imagination,” perfectly captures everything that makes SLAPPER such a compelling artist. It radiates the euphoric spirit of late-night dance music while carrying the warmth and nostalgia of the classic electronic records that inspired an entire generation. Echoes of the late ’90s and early 2000s can certainly be heard throughout the production, yet the song never feels like an exercise in nostalgia alone. Instead, it reimagines that era through a modern lens, blending soaring synths, carefully chosen vocal samples, and polished production into a record that feels both comfortingly familiar and refreshingly contemporary.

What makes SLAPPER particularly admirable is his unwavering commitment to craftsmanship. Every melody serves a purpose, every layered synth contributes to the atmosphere, and every production choice reflects an artist who understands that electronic music can communicate emotion just as powerfully as any lyric. Even after more than twenty years of creating music, there remains a genuine curiosity and passion in his work, a willingness to keep exploring new ideas while never losing sight of the identity that has defined the project from the beginning.

Beyond the music itself lies an equally inspiring journey. Sharing stages with iconic artists such as Alphaville and De/Vision, travelling across Europe in pursuit of musical inspiration, and balancing the demanding realities of independent artistry while maintaining complete creative freedom all speak to an artist driven by passion rather than recognition. It is that dedication that continues to push SLAPPER forward, allowing every new release to feel like another meaningful chapter rather than simply another single.

In this exclusive interview with Spinex Music, SLAPPER reflects on the remarkable journey that has shaped his career, the inspiration behind “Imagination,” the enduring influence of classic electronic music, the challenges and rewards of remaining fiercely independent, and the exciting creative vision guiding his future releases. For longtime fans and first-time listeners alike, this conversation offers a fascinating insight into an artist who continues to demonstrate that the most memorable electronic music isn’t simply heard—it is felt.

Exclusive Interview With Slapper 53

For readers discovering SLAPPER for the first time, can you introduce yourself and take us back to where it all began? What first inspired you to create electronic music, and how has your vision for the project evolved since those early days?

SLAPPER was born more than twenty years ago from my desire to give a new perspective to the music I loved listening to, remixing and playing during my years as a DJ in Bucharest. Over time, the project evolved into something much more personal.

Today, SLAPPER is where nostalgia, emotion and electronic music come together to create soundtracks for both the dancefloor and the moments in between. I love blending the atmosphere of classic electronic music with modern production, always trying to create songs that people can both feel and move to.

Every artist has a defining moment that changes the course of their career. Looking back, what would you say has been the most important milestone in your musical journey, and why?

I don’t think there was just one defining milestone. Instead, my career has been shaped by years of experience as a DJ in some of Bucharest’s major clubs. Those years taught me how people react to music, what creates emotion on a dancefloor, and how a great night is carefully built from beginning to end.

If I had to choose one unforgettable moment, it would be April 12, 2008, when I opened for Alphaville at Arenele Romane in Bucharest. Performing in front of more than 5,000 people and sharing the stage with one of the bands that shaped my childhood was an incredible experience. I was honestly overwhelmed… and I’ll never forget that feeling.

Your latest single, “Imagination”, feels like the beginning of a fresh creative chapter. What inspired the song, and at what point did you realize it would become the perfect introduction to your new dance-oriented direction?

“Imagination” started from a simple idea: I wanted to create a song that captured the feeling of being on a dancefloor late at night. I’ve always loved electronic music that makes people move while also carrying emotion, so I tried to combine both. The track is inspired by the uplifting energy of classic dance music, reinterpreted through my own synth-driven sound.

“Imagination” is your first release in two years to feature vocal samples. What inspired you to bring vocals back into your music, and how do they help shape the emotion and atmosphere of the track?

For quite some time I wanted to return to working with vocal samples, but only when they truly served the song. With “Imagination”, everything fell into place. My goal was to recreate the feeling of a late-90s or early-2000s dance anthem—something that could sit naturally alongside artists like Sash!, Darude or ATB. The vocal samples became another instrument, adding emotion, movement and that familiar sense of nostalgia.

Your music beautifully blends nostalgia with modern electronic production. When creating “Imagination,” how did you balance the uplifting spirit of classic dance music with the fresh, contemporary sound that defines SLAPPER today?

“Beautifully”? Well… Thank you! For me, music has always been the way I express emotions that are difficult to put into words. Nostalgia is a natural part of my music because it reflects the soundtrack of my own life.
I enjoy balancing uplifting melodies with more melancholic moments, creating music that feels both emotional and energetic. That’s the balance I constantly search for.

You’ve been active as both a producer and a DJ, sharing stages with artists such as Alphaville and De/Vision. How have those live experiences influenced your approach to producing music and understanding what truly connects with an audience?

Growing up listening to Jean-Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk, Vangelis and Enigma helped shape my musical language.
Later, seeing many of my favourite artists perform live taught me something equally important: how to build an experience rather than simply play songs.

I’ve spent more than a decade travelling across Europe to see some of my favourite bands live, and every concert has taught me something about storytelling, stage design and creating a memorable connection with the audience.

The electronic music scene has changed dramatically since SLAPPER first began. How do you stay creatively inspired while adapting to new trends without losing the distinctive sound and identity you’ve built over the years?

I’ve never wanted to change my sound simply because trends change. Instead, I prefer to evolve naturally whenever I feel inspired by a new idea or a different creative direction. One of the greatest advantages of being an independent artist is the freedom to follow your own vision without external pressure. That freedom has always been essential to me.

As an independent artist, what have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced throughout your career, and what advice would you give to upcoming producers hoping to establish their own identity in electronic music?

My advice is simple: protect your identity. Don’t let industry expectations define your music! At the same time, don’t try to do absolutely everything yourself forever.

Today I’m producing the music, editing videos, planning promotions, managing social media and replying to messages across more than ten different platforms—all while working a full-time job. Being independent is incredibly rewarding, but it’s also demanding. At some point, surrounding yourself with the right people becomes just as important as writing good music.

Looking beyond “Imagination,” what goals have you set for yourself during this new chapter of SLAPPER, and what can fans expect from your upcoming releases in 2026?

My goal for 2026 is to develop two parallel projects. The first is a new synthpop/synthwave album that naturally continues the story started with “Hope”. The second is a dance-oriented EP, where “Imagination” serves as the opening chapter. I enjoy moving between these two worlds because together they represent who I am as an artist.

Finally, when listeners finish hearing “Imagination,” what is the one feeling or message you hope stays with them long after the music fades?

Hmmm… I hope listeners discover that SLAPPER is about much more than dance beats or catchy melodies. Sometimes the most powerful emotion comes from waiting for a piano to arrive, or letting a synth slowly build over two minutes before reaching its climax.

I still believe electronic music can tell stories without words. If someone finishes listening to “Imagination” feeling a little more optimistic, emotional or inspired than before they pressed play, then I’ve achieved exactly what I set out to do.
