Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?
Deven Powers: Assuming that people would do things for free based on your talent. In this industry, you need a budget no matter what talents you have. I learned early on that you need to have your business in line first. My good friend always tells me it’s show business, not show friendship
Can you tell us about your latest releases and what inspired you to create them?
Deven Powers: My latest album is called “The one”. What inspired me to create this album and the lead single is a combination of past relationships and experiences. To form my vision of the one, each relationship teaches you something. What I’ve learned is that each person has an amazing quality. I just wish I could put all the great qualities in one person to me. That’s how I got the concept for “The one”.
Can you give us a brief insight about your upcoming projects?
Deven Powers: My upcoming project is an album full of love music that sounds like the music I grew up listening to. It has that old school vibe with the new school twist.
What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?
Deven Powers: You have to believe in yourself before anyone else believes in you . You can’t wait on the opportunity, you have to create the opportunity. A legendary music producer once told me in order to be famous you have to make yourself famous by putting in the work, writing the songs, paying for the recording sessions, music videos, promoting your music, organically doing performances etc.
Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?
Deven Powers: Don’t rush the process and to never give up. In the end,, the turtle won the race. Know matter how long it takes to perfect your craft it’s worth it so take your time. From my experience everything will fall into place in God’s perfect timing we just gotta do it like Nike.
What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?
Deven Powers: Well I’m a Leading Actor, Tv Host – Mr Hollywood Tv Show , Red Carpet Host & The Star of the new Tv Series (IN God We Trust) coming soon . One of my 1st loves is playing the drums and doing hair, anything creative I’m passionate about.
Any last piece of advice for those artists who just started making music?
Deven Powers: It’s a thing to listen to constructive criticism. Listen to constructive creative criticism when it aligns with your purpose but don’t let it alter your vision because your vision comes from God you gotta do what makes you happy if feels right 9 times out of 10 it is right. Most importantly keep God 1st.
