Canadian singer songwriter Heather Ferguson is set to release her new digital single “Broken Horned Kudu” on March 20, 2026. Grounded in jazz and shaped through international collaboration, the track brings together Ferguson and a group of respected South African musicians in Cape Town. The result is a rich blend of Cape Jazz, world jazz, and expressive vocal storytelling.
Inspired by her travels across East and Southern Africa, “Broken Horned Kudu” reflects on themes of hardship, survival, and the delicate nature of life. The image of a kudu with a broken horn becomes a powerful symbol for individuals and communities that continue to endure despite forces beyond their control. Sung in both English and Xhosa, the song carries a deeply personal message while also embracing a shared cultural and musical connection.
The recording began in Cape Town under the guidance of acclaimed jazz pianist and arranger George Werner, with sessions bringing together a diverse group of musicians. The project was later completed in Victoria, British Columbia, where producer Wynn Gogol handled postproduction while maintaining close collaboration with the artists involved.
Musically, the track draws on the traditions of Cape jazz, layered with African rhythms and a spacious, organic sound. It is a piece that allows each instrument and voice to breathe, creating a balance between individual expression and collective energy.
“Broken-Horned Kudu became a way to talk about resilience and the will to survive, even when that resilience is compromised by desperate choices,” Ferguson shares. “Despite that, we find hope. In Xhosa, they say, “Kuzolunga”; it will all be fine.”

This release marks a meaningful step forward in Ferguson’s artistic journey, expanding her jazz foundation through global collaboration. Her music continues to explore themes of loss, power, and resilience, shaped by her experiences with travel, literature, and human connection.
Music publicist Danielle Holian of Decent Music PR describes the single as a rare and powerful collaboration that highlights jazz as a universal language. She notes that Ferguson’s storytelling feels both intimate and far reaching, while the contributions from South African musicians bring added depth and authenticity to the recording.
