TikTok Faces Music Removals: Insights into UMPG Impact and Industry Dynamics: In a recent development, TikTok initiated the removal of music composed or co-written by songwriters under Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG), extending the earlier removal of UMG recordings earlier this year.

Contrary to TikTok’s statement asserting that UMG and UMPG’s catalogs combined represented only “between 20% and 30%” of popular songs on its platform (varying by territory), Billboard has conducted a thorough analysis using chart data, revealing a potentially more significant impact, particularly in the United States.

According to Billboard’s findings, during the final quarter of 2023, 41 out of the top 100 tracks were released by UMG labels. However, UMPG holds an ownership interest in the compositions for a staggering 61 out of the top 100 tracks. This data suggests a deeper and broader impact on the popular music landscape, challenging TikTok’s initial estimation of the extent of the dispute’s consequences.

The complexity of the matter is further compounded by the rising prevalence of interpolations, samples, and the increasing number of tracks featuring numerous credited co-writers in contemporary popular music.

As this dispute unfolds, the music industry awaits further developments and potential resolutions that could reshape the dynamics of music streaming platforms and their relationships with major music publishing entities.

Stay tuned for updates on this evolving story.
