Americana artist Marques Morel has recently unveiled his highly praised album, ‘Tales and Tellings,’
Produced by Andrija Tokic and recorded at Nashville’s Bomb Shelter Studio, ‘Tales and Tellings’ showcases Morel’s versatile talents on acoustic guitar, vocals, and harmonica. The album features a stellar lineup including Jack Lawrence on bass, Ellen Angelico on lap steel, mandolin, pedal steel, electric and acoustic guitars, Charlie Garmendia on drums and percussion, Bo Coleman on lead guitar, Billy Contreras on fiddle, and Matt Menold on piano and keys.
Reflecting on the album, Morel shares, “‘Tales and Tellings’ is a culmination of years of musical journey. Some of these songs have been with me for a long time, waiting for the right moment to be recorded. Working with Andrija Tokic was an incredible experience; he brought out the best in us during the recording process at Bomb Shelter Studio. We aimed for a live feel with minimal overdubs, capturing a raw and authentic sound that defines this album.”
The album kicks off with “Crazy Out There,” a captivating tale set to a half-time rhythm, narrating an encounter with a mythical figure living by the river. “Gas Station Girls,” the lead single, introduced by Americana Highways, is celebrated for its classic grassroots sound and reminiscent of old-time honky-tonk rhythms, with Morel’s vocals drawing comparisons to Elvis Presley’s trills.
Each track on ‘Tales and Tellings’ unfolds like a story, from the bittersweet “Litter of 3,” a heartfelt ballad about finding family in unexpected places, to the introspective “Fruit on the Trees,” exploring themes of lost youth and resilience. The album traverses various musical landscapes, from the upbeat energy of “Drive All Night” driven by slide guitar and hypnotic drums, to the nostalgic longing in “Porch Songs” and the playful narrative of “Lone Rooster Blues.”
