Corey Manning has a powerful story that goes beyond the punchlines. His journey as a comedian is a story of resilience, drawing inspiration from life’s challenges and triumphs. From finding early joy in the laughter shared with friends to transforming his own struggles with addiction and cancer into material that inspires and connects, Manning has made his mark as a unique voice in comedy. Known for his blend of humor and heartfelt storytelling, he uses his platform not only to entertain but also to foster understanding and hope.

In this interview, Manning reflects on what inspired him to pursue comedy, the obstacles he’s faced along the way, and how he tackles serious themes with laughter. He shares how his comedic style combines relatability with honest reflection, creating an experience that leaves audiences both laughing and uplifted. Manning’s vision for the future is grounded in a desire to make a positive impact through humor, as he continues to expand his reach, share his journey, and inspire others along the way.

Can you tell us about your journey as a comedian? What inspired you to pursue a career in comedy?
“My inspiration comes from the various international, national, and local comedians that I have seen do stand-up on TV or in person. My journey as a comedian began when I realized the power of laughter to connect people and bring light to tough situations. Growing up, I found solace and joy in comedy, which helped me navigate challenges in my life, including overcoming substance abuse addiction and my battle with prostate cancer. My experiences have shaped my perspective and inspired me to share my story through humor. I started performing at open mics and gradually worked my way up, headlining at venues and festivals, each step reaffirming my passion for making people laugh.”

How would you describe your unique style as a comedian? What sets you apart from other comedians?

“My style is a blend of relatable storytelling and candid humor. I draw from my life experiences, whether it’s about overcoming health challenges or navigating the complexities of life. What sets me apart is my ability to tackle serious topics with humor, allowing audiences to reflect while they laugh. I focus on connecting with people through shared experiences, and my comedy often aims to uplift and inspire, proving that laughter can coexist with meaningful messages.”

Could you share some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a comedian and how you overcame them?

“One of the biggest challenges I faced was overcoming the fear of vulnerability on stage, especially when discussing personal topics like my addiction, my cancer journey, and being a black dad. I had to learn to embrace that vulnerability, turning it into a source of strength. By sharing my story honestly, I found that audiences responded positively, which gave me the confidence to keep pushing forward. Another challenge has been navigating the ups and downs of the comedy industry, but I’ve learned to stay persistent and focused on my passion, adapting my approach as needed.”

What is your creative process like? How do you approach comedy?
“My creative process begins with reflecting on my daily life and experiences. I often jot down observations, thoughts, and funny moments that resonate with me. I then develop these ideas into stories and test them out at open mics or smaller shows. I value feedback from the audience, as it helps me refine my material. Collaboration with fellow comedians also sparks new ideas and perspectives, keeping my comedy fresh and relevant.”

Are there any particular themes or messages that you aim to convey through your comedy?
“I aim to convey themes of resilience, hope, and the importance of community. My experiences as a prostate cancer survivor and my work in youth mentoring and addiction prevention influence my comedy, pushing me to address serious topics like health and personal growth while infusing humor. I want my audiences to leave feeling uplifted and empowered, reminding them that laughter can be a powerful tool for healing and connection.”

What are your long-term goals as a comedian? Where do you see yourself and your comedy in the next few years?
“My long-term goal is to expand my reach as a comedian while continuing to raise awareness about important issues like prostate cancer and mental health. I envision myself performing at larger venues and festivals, possibly even creating a comedy special that highlights my journey and the lessons learned along the way. Additionally, I want to continue offering workshops and talks that empower others through humor and storytelling, making a positive impact both on and off the stage.”
