Can you tell us about your journey as an indie musician? What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
Music has been in my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up listening to all genres of music, from Pop, Country, Jazz, Gospel, Worship, Rap, EDM and Rock. I found that, I was more drawn to the pop and country scene and chose to follow a path as a singer and songwriter in pop music.
I developed a fascination and passion to follow my dream of being a professional recording artist when I listened to actress and singer, Ashley Tisdale at 7 years old and since then, I haven’t looked back. I’m waking up blessed everyday doing what I love!
How would you describe your unique style and sound as an artist? What sets you apart from other musicians?
I’d say my sound is a blend of Dance Pop, with elements in EDM. I’m experimenting with each project I release, and love playing around with different instruments. With my love for Country music as well, I’m interpreting some sounds and instruments in that genre as too! – I’d say, what sets me apart from most musicians is, the fact that I’m international and trilingual. I’ve managed to write and sing in Spanish, and Italian, and hope that with songs in those languages, it translates and fans are able to connect to my music as much as my songs in English!
Could you share some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as an indie musician and how you overcame them?
As an Independent artist, I feel that I’ve faced quite a bit of challenges, more than a signed artist. For starters, as an Indie artist, I’m doing everything myself. From self promotion, to talking to distribution companies, figuring out how to market and come up with campaigns for an album or single release, sending emails and calling radio to do press, it’s all a lot of work, and the obstacle behind that is – without a team doing their part in each one of those department like they would for a signed artist, it becomes very stressful and days very long.
What is your creative process like? How do you approach songwriting and composing music?
When it comes to my creative process – I’m in the studio with my producer Paul inspired by artists I’ll be listening to, and I’ll build an instrumental with him around the songs I find hot in the moment. I’ve currently been listening to Tate Mcrae, Britney Spears, The Weekend, and Kelsea Ballerini. When it comes to my songwriting, I write every song from personal experience and hope that at the end of the day, if someone resonates and connects with my songs, then it tells me I’m doing something right as an artist.
Are there any particular themes or messages that you aim to convey through your music? What inspires your lyrics?
I don’t think there’s anything really in particular that I sit and go
“Today I’m going to write about this topic because my fans will connect with it” however, I am a woman in my 20s experiencing life like everyone else, I just choose to talk about my life through songs! I get inspired by everything and anything. I’m a big people person. I’d say I’m quite the social butterfly! I love getting to know someone.
I love creating meaningful bonds with people and going in depth to create that intimate connection. When it comes down to writing lyrics to my songs, It’s the easier part for me because I’m expressing my thoughts and feelings through my songs and experiences about and with that person.
What are your long-term goals as an indie musician? Where do you see yourself and your music in the next few years?
My long term goals include signing to a record label, landing a strong but good publishing and record deal. I’d like to become a touring recording artist and continue to share my love and experiences through fun and upbeat songs! I see myself doing collaborations and writing with other artists on future albums, I’d like to write songs for other artists and just continue to grow and evolve gradually.
I hope to remain humble and release music that fans will relate with and go “Claire Sully, is so real, and so relatable, I want to listen to her music for the rest of my life” I want to do this right… I want to be an approachable artist and be in this industry for as long as I can.
