Can you tell us about your journey as an indie musician? What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
As an independent artist, my journey has been a remarkable one. I’ve embraced the ups and downs as valuable learning opportunities while treasuring the highs that come with applying my knowledge and skills. The process of creation has been immensely fulfilling, and the connections I’ve made with fellow musicians, producers, arrangers, and fans have been a true joy.
My passion for pursuing a music career was ignited during my elementary school years when I witnessed a church choir’s captivating performance, fueling my desire to create memorable experiences for others. Inspired by the grace and talent of Whitney Houston, I set my sights on becoming a singer, a dream I cherished from a young age, even winning 2nd place for a poem I wrote in 2nd grade declaring “I am going to be a singer.”
How would you describe your unique style and sound as an artist? What sets you apart from other musicians?
My voice is often described as soothing, relaxing, and ethereal—drawing comparisons to the legendary Sade, which I find humbling. I define my sound as warm, uplifting, and universally captivating. What truly sets me apart is the fusion of my distinctive life experiences with intelligence, integrity, and creativity, shaping a musical perspective that is entirely my own.
Could you share some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as an indie musician and how you overcame them?
Securing the right team and delegating tasks has been one of my greatest challenges. Initially, I lacked control over selecting musicians and booking shows, causing my performances to come to a halt when those responsible moved on. To address this, I sought education. I studied public relations and advertising, devoured books, took online classes with Berklee School of Music, and attended industry workshops and conferences. Through years of learning, networking, and gaining knowledge, the process of booking and delegating has become more seamless, allowing me to be both an artist and a leader for my brand.
What is your creative process like? How do you approach songwriting and composing music?
Many of my songs have been written during car rides, while others were born from casual guitar playing at home. When creating, I often seek inspiration from instrumental music or beats that resonate with my current state of mind. Songwriting is akin to pouring my thoughts into a journal, allowing me to express struggles, triumphs or the love I feel for my husband. Whether capturing the depths of my emotions or celebrating moments of joy, I find a connection with a beat or guitar chords and give voice to those
feelings through my songs.
Are there any particular themes or messages that you aim to convey through your music? What inspires your lyrics?
In my music, a prevailing theme of encouragement, resilience, and love emerges from the depths of my personal journey. Having overcome numerous challenges in life, I am empowered and driven to extend my hand to others, reassuring them that they are not alone in their own paths. Additionally, as someone who embraces affection and cherishes expressing love, this aspect becomes a profound source of inspiration. My aim is to craft a genuine and relatable journey, blending thoughtful contemplations with heartfelt honesty, creating a musical experience that uplifts and resonates with the soul.
Tell us about your latest music project.
Introducing my latest musical endeavor, “Me Time.” This February, I shared the first song, “Glowing,” with the world. Its purpose is to connect with those who struggle with self-consciousness or aspects of social anxiety. Through this song, I aim to remind individuals, especially those blessed with inner beauty, that it is their genuine essence that draws people towards them. The rest of the “Me Time” album unravels different facets of my own journey, offering an intimate glimpse into my world. Join me on this heartfelt exploration of self-discovery and embrace the beauty within.
