The Rooks – Renegade: Ahead of their show opening for Blossoms (Sat 19th October), Glasgow Indie-Rock 5 piece The Rooks release the infectious new single ‘Renegade’.
Only the band’s second release following the success of their debut single ‘Lay Me Down’, ‘Renegade’ showcases the striking completeness of the band’s sound. Tight bass, punchy drums and layers of thick guitar tones create a warming full band backdrop for the husky and emotive lead vocal delivery.
Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Jim Lowe (Stereophonics, The Charlatans, Herbie Hancock, Foo Fighters, Manic Street Preachers, Taylor Swift), ‘Renegade’ builds from its introspective verse to a vibrant and anthemic chorus. Building throughout, the track ends on a climactic final chorus as the band hammer home the commercial edge to their Pop-Rock sound.

The single dives deep into themes of escape and self-reflection. Matthew McFadyen and Ross Gardiner, the band’s primary songwriters, explained: “I think the song’s about escaping and leaving something behind. Whether that be a feeling, a place or a person. Maybe, less the need for something or someone new, and more the need to get away from yourself.
That someone is just a vehicle for distraction. I think most of us could use that at some point, whether we’d like to admit it.
The song was recorded in London with our producer Jim Lowe. The track took its time to come to life and I think a few of us were having doubts of it being the next single. On our 3rd day in the studio we went back to what we had and started adding layers. The track slowly started to turn into a monster, and after a full days work, we had ‘Renegade.”
The Rooks have established themselves as one of the most exciting new live acts in Scotland, with raw high-octane which have already seen them sell out Glasgow’s iconic King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut twice and performed at major venues supporting artists including Luke La Volpe at the SWG3 Galvanizers and The Shambolics at The Garage. With their upcoming show supporting Blossom’s at the O2 Academy in Glasgow, and an upcoming UK tour supporting Louis Berry, The Rooks continue to build momentum, ready to take their music to a national audience.
