There is a quiet confidence in the way Paul Minnich approaches music, choosing honesty over spectacle and depth over decoration. Known as The Lawn Chair Poet, Minnich has spent more than two decades refining a songwriting style rooted in reflection, where everyday moments are transformed into meaningful narratives. His work does not rely on grand statements but instead finds strength in subtle emotions, unspoken connections, and the small details that often define real life.
His latest single, “Your Clown,” captures that philosophy with striking clarity. Rather than presenting love as something flawless or overly romanticized, Minnich leans into its imperfections, highlighting the humor, humility, and quiet devotion that exist within genuine relationships. Inspired by the dynamics he observed in a close friend’s marriage, the song reveals how love is often expressed in ways that are simple, awkward, and deeply human.
In this conversation, Minnich speaks candidly about the inspiration behind “Your Clown,” his approach to writing with emotional precision, and the journey that has shaped his voice as a storyteller. He reflects on vulnerability, the importance of connection, and the evolving balance between personal expression and universal meaning, offering thoughtful insight into an artistry grounded in authenticity.

“Your Clown” captures a very honest and imperfect version of love, something many people can relate to but rarely articulate so openly. Can you walk us through the personal experiences that inspired this song and how you translated those real-life emotions into such a heartfelt narrative?
Your clown was originally written for a very dear friend’s wedding. When I view relationships, I see past the surface level. I see the subtle exchanges between people, and that’s what I write about. So, when I sat down to write a wedding song, I thought about what I saw in their relationship. I would see my friend expressing his love and admiration through acts of humor and humility; one could say he was acting like a clown.
The song leans into the idea that love is not always expressed through grand gestures but often through awkward, playful, and even clumsy moments. What drew you to explore this side of love, and why do you think it resonates so strongly with listeners?
As I stated earlier, I sing about the things we don’t always acknowledge or put into words. Things such as body language between people, the warm feeling we get when you have an unspoken exchange and you both know you both got it, the confident feeling of knowing you’re in love when your partner does something silly and all you can do is smile and think, “Thank God they are here.” I believe it resonates with people because it’s difficult to put these moments into words, but when someone does, it hits home.
Your lyrics, especially lines like “a bouquet of words and rhymes,” feel simple on the surface yet deeply meaningful. How do you strike that balance between keeping your writing accessible while still delivering emotional depth?
I pin down exactly what I’m trying to share, then I find the fewest words to express that concept. I’ll then refine and mold those words until they fit the song in not only meaning but also matching the emotion of the music.
There is a noticeable sense of vulnerability in “Your Clown,” particularly in how you admit imperfections in expressing love. Was there ever a moment of hesitation in sharing something this personal, and how do you push past that as a songwriter?
Yes, I used to question everything, especially my abilities to even be a musician or songwriter, and therefore had little confidence to share personal feelings. But over time I saw how my songs would affect people. I discovered people would react to a performance of a song I wrote with emotion such as laughter or crying. That made me realize the entire point of songwriting and performing is to get people to feel what you feel. Once I discovered I could do just that, I knew I had to share those personal/vulnerable topics no matter how scary it felt.
Sonically, the track feels warm and intimate with its mid-tempo, guitar-driven arrangement. How intentional was that sound in supporting the story you are telling, and what was your approach in shaping the overall atmosphere of the song?
Completely intentional. I really wanted a solid and pronounced beat to drive the song. My hope is that others will want to dance to this song as their wedding song. I wanted to give them a rhythm they felt like they could embrace and then dance together to.
Humor and playfulness play an important role in this record, especially in the idea of being “your clown.” How do you view humor as part of a healthy relationship, and how important is it for you to reflect that in your music?
I feel humor is a foundational pillar relationships are built on. That’s why I had to put it into this song. Humor is the foundation to the meaning of this song.
You have built your identity as “The Lawn Chair Poet,” rooted in storytelling and simple, meaningful moments. How does that philosophy guide your songwriting process, and how does it show up in a song like “Your Clown”?
It shows up in the ideas I chose to sing about. Simple everyday things that happen to all of us on any given day. What is unique to my process is that I sing about things through a lens of reflection rather than just observation.
With over two decades of experience as a songwriter, how has your perspective on storytelling and emotional expression evolved, and in what ways do you think your newer music reflects that growth?
I believe that just living and experiencing life for the past two decades has shaped the way I see the world and that is what comes out in my songs.
Your catalog includes songs like “American Valor,” which carry strong themes of honor and social meaning, alongside deeply personal tracks like “Your Clown.” How do you navigate between writing for personal reflection and writing for a broader message?
I don’t feel there are broader messages. American Valor is an anthem simply saying to a veteran that I see your story, I acknowledge your story, and that your story matters cause it happened to you. Now let’s raise a beer to you.
As you continue releasing new music consistently and performing in intimate settings, what direction do you see your artistry heading next, and what kind of stories or emotions are you most excited to explore moving forward?
I’ve always felt like I have two loves when it comes to the type of music I write, Rock & Country. I’ve tried to walk a fine line to not go too far one direction. I think it’s time to let go and see where it goes. While exploring more emotions such as loss, determination, and not caring what others think.
