Italian composer and producer Stefano Schintu has released his new album, A Debt of Ashes and Time, a soundtrack and instrumental collection that moves through dark, dramatic and reflective musical landscapes. Based near Rome, Schintu has crafted a body of work that sits between cinematic orchestral music, emotional soundtrack composition and epic contemporary classical soundscapes.

A Debt of Ashes and Time explores the relationship between what is lost, what remains and what is carried forward. Throughout the record, ashes represent memory and transformation, while time reflects change. Each wordless composition draws on experiences of loss and human connection, alongside the hope of finding light after difficult moments. The album also ties into a fantasy novel Schintu is currently writing, extending the same emotional world across two creative forms.

Every track on the album began life as a melody imagined internally and refined at the piano until it found a clear emotional and structural identity. From there, Schintu built out the arrangements in Logic, experimenting with orchestration, dynamics, texture and sound design. The approach was deliberately iterative, with tracks revisited and listened to repeatedly until each one matched his original musical vision.

The production draws on virtual instruments alongside experimental sound design, balancing intimate passages against evolving tension and sweeping orchestral moments. Pianist and arranger Edgardo Caputo lent his support during the arrangement process, though the album otherwise carries no featured artists or major external collaborators.

Music has long been Schintu’s deepest form of expression, a way of channelling feeling, good or bad, into sound. His creative process begins with melodies, emotions and imagined scenes that take shape in his mind before becoming real at the piano. His sound draws on influences including Hans Zimmer, whose command of emotional atmosphere has shaped his approach, alongside Ennio Morricone, Thomas Bergersen, James Newton Howard, Ramin Djawadi and Ludwig Göransson.

Schintu describes his own work as emotional, romantic cinematic music, with each piece approached as a story or scene designed to feel immersive, personal and open to the listener’s own imagination. He treats composition as emotional storytelling rather than simple production, with every piece beginning from an original melody and an internal vision before any production tools come into play. Alongside his music, Schintu works internationally as a Creative Designer, a career in which much of his professional recognition to date has been built.
