Calcutta-born, Madrid-based artist weyvir is getting ready to release “Streets of Love, Pt. 1” on September 9, a song that has been nearly a decade in the making. Blending indie rock, alternative pop, power pop and surf rock, the track captures the strange feeling of holding onto someone long after you know you probably should let them go.
The story began when weyvir was still in high school. Written almost eight years ago, the song started with its chorus, born from heartbreak and feelings that were difficult to say out loud. Rather than leaving the idea behind, he kept returning to it, allowing the song to grow and change alongside him.
“I haven’t ever been able to give up on this song since I wrote it, and I’m finally giving it the ending it deserves.”
That sentiment gives “Streets of Love, Pt. 1” much of its emotional pull. This is not simply a song about missing someone. The chorus was inspired in part by Band of Horses’ “The Funeral,” while the rhythmic foundation takes inspiration from The Wonders’ “That Thing You Do.” The melodic and energetic character of the song also carries touches of the Beach Boys, Supergrass and Arctic Monkeys, resulting in bright guitar-driven rock that sits against a more complicated emotional story.
The single follows “just gotta let u know,” a genre-blending release that brought together bossa nova, grunge, pop punk and UK garage. That willingness to move between sounds has become an important part of weyvir’s creative identity, with his music balancing alternative rock instincts and a strong pop sensibility.
His journey has taken him from Calcutta to the DIY music circuit around Syracuse University and eventually Madrid. Along the way, his solo catalogue has passed 25,000 streams, while collaborations have surpassed one million. He has shared stages with artists including Rebecca Black and performed with Picture Us Tiny. He also fronts the rock band Hard Fuse, where he handles vocals and bass.
“Streets of Love, Pt. 1” feels special because of how long it has travelled with its creator. What began as a teenage attempt to make sense of heartbreak has survived into adulthood, carrying memories of where it started while gaining a new perspective from everything that came after.
