Mahalia – Luvergirl: Mahalia is entering a fresh chapter with her seven-track project Luvergirl, a heartfelt tribute to her Jamaican heritage and a bold expression of growth and self-assurance. The Midlands-born singer-songwriter, known for her raw honesty and reflective storytelling, dives deeper than ever before into themes of love, identity, and self-discovery.
Building on the Caribbean influences that shaped earlier fan favorites like Simmer, Luvergirl blends vibrant reggae and dancehall elements with Mahalia’s signature soulful sound. The project is a celebration of her dual heritage and a personal journey into how it has influenced her understanding of love in all its complexity.
The guest lineup is a powerful reflection of the project’s roots. Rising dancehall stars Masicka and Bayka inject fiery passion, while reggae sensation Lila Iké brings a soulful, comforting presence. At the heart of the collection, reggae legend Tanya Stephens commands attention on the track Pity, which beautifully reimagines her classic It’s A Pity with a fresh sample and newly recorded vocals.
Mahalia shares, “This project is a love letter to the woman I am right now. A love letter to love in all its forms and me in all of mine. I made a lot of this music in the Caribbean—Jamaica mostly. Being out there has allowed me to reconnect with myself in a way I haven’t before. Being a dual-heritage kid growing up in the Midlands, I struggled to navigate most things, love specifically. Making this project really allowed me to figure out some internal struggles I hadn’t realised I’d been dealing with. It felt like my moment to experience the magic I have in me as a young woman, and I think that magic is in the music too.”
Luvergirl marks a vibrant new chapter in Mahalia’s career, blending rich cultural sounds with deeply personal storytelling. It is a testament to the power of embracing your roots while confidently moving forward.
