Scottish, now Melbourne based Indie-Rock-come-Alternative-Pop riser Quinny shares the new video for ‘Up The Dollar’ taken from the debut album ‘Outer Monologue’ (Out Now). Building a reputation for emotive lyricism and infectious guitar led Indie sound, the album promises to deliver some captivating, fun and inventive songwriting.
Renowned for his tongue-in-cheek lyricism, as well as frequently having strangers mistaking him for Ed Sheeran in public, Quinny’s musical endeavours has seen him fuse his burgeoning musical flair over the years with his four “influential B’s”, namely Biffy Clyro, Blink-182, The Beatles and Bombay Bicycle Club. With tours in the UK and North America under his belt, the multifaceted creative relocated to Melbourne in early 2020, with his newfound hometown sparking creative excitement that is now set to culminate in the release of his debut album.
Speaking about the new video for ‘Up The Dollar’, Quinny adds: “‘Up the Dollar’ was my attempt at writing a song from an alt-right perspective. After all, that’s where the money is surely? Anyway, as is the way with songs I couldn’t escape my own bias and the tune ended up becoming more of a comedy piece, though the lyrics can definitely get some strange looks when taken on face value or out of context! It should probably come with a disclaimer: ‘This song is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.’”
Produced in collaboration with acclaimed names Robin Evans (The View, Dodgy) and Melbourne-based musician Rowena Wise, the album also features a number of prominent collaborators, including Marie Collins (The Vegan Leather), Graham McCusker (Marouli), and Kieran Logan (Kassidy). Led by the new single and video for ‘Raining Monarchs’, the new album highlights the vibrant, melodic songwriting which has seen Quinny receive support from BBC Scotland and across tastemaker press so far.
Across Outer Monologue’s 11 tracks, Quinny showcases not just an ear for intricate, often deceptively catchy guitar riffs but also an ability to craft lyricism which is at once sincere and reflective whilst also retaining a satirical sense of humour. Form the vibrant, The Cure-esque soundscape of opener ‘Raining Monarchs’, to the fuzzy synth and biting social commentary of ‘Up the Dollar’, to pensive and thoughtful melancholy of ‘Darkness at the Door’, the album showcases the full width of Quinny’s writing.
Quinny has already gained traction with previous releases ‘Settlers’ and ‘Everything You Want’, which have both received airplay on BBC’s Roddy Hart Show and BBC Rapal, as well as press acclaim from Backseat Mafia, AAA Backstage, and Tenement TV. Quinny’s work has also crossed into visual media, with his track ‘Friends’ featured on the BBC Comedy Short ‘Cable Tied‘, available on BBC iPlayer. Previous music videos have seen collaborations with the likes of Richard Wilson (One Foot in the Grave/Merlin), Martin Quinn (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds/Derry Girls), Stephen Buchanan (Comedian/Podcaster), Samuel Blenkin (Black Mirror/Atlanta), Vittorio Angelone (Comedian/Podcaster), Reuben Joseph (Hamilton) and Shubham Saraf (Bodyguard/Criminal UK), showcasing Quinny’s talent for blending music and visual storytelling.
