French singer-songwriter Sylvain Zebo returns with his latest single, Test, a refined and atmospheric release that blends French pop and pop rock influences with poetic lyricism and cinematic sound design. The track continues Zebo’s long-standing commitment to emotionally rich songwriting, pairing introspective themes with sophisticated, carefully layered production.
Drawing subtle comparisons to iconic French artists such as Alain Bashung, Marc Lavoine, and Étienne Daho, Test highlights Zebo’s ability to merge classic French chanson sensibilities with a modern, immersive sonic approach. The result is a song that feels both timeless and contemporary, balancing emotional intimacy with expansive musical textures.
At the core of Test is a carefully built instrumental foundation of shimmering synths and a hypnotic guitar motif that anchors the chorus. The song evolved naturally during the creative process, with Zebo revealing that the turning point came when the central guitar riff was introduced.
“I composed the synth parts with the piano, but it was when I found the guitar riff for the chorus that everything became fluid and ethereal,” Zebo explains. “The lyrics were added later, reflecting on the ups and downs of life, passions, feelings, and love, along with our often dehumanized experiences.”
Thematically, Test explores the emotional contradictions of modern life—love, uncertainty, passion, and the increasingly mechanical way human experiences can feel in today’s world. These ideas are expressed through understated yet poetic lyricism, a hallmark of Zebo’s writing style.

Entirely self-produced, the single further demonstrates Zebo’s versatility as a complete artist. He takes on the roles of songwriter, arranger, producer, and sound engineer, shaping every layer of the track into a cohesive and deeply personal soundscape. The result is a work that feels both intimate in its emotional core and expansive in its sonic reach.
Sylvain Zebo’s artistic journey is rooted in the tradition of French lyric-driven songwriting. Born in Madagascar and of Martinican heritage, he grew up in Lescar near Pau in southern France, where he was first introduced to music through influences such as Neil Young and Georges Brassens. These early inspirations led him to guitar, songwriting, and performances in rock and blues bands before fully committing to a solo artistic path.
After relocating to Paris, Zebo refined his craft through formal training in singing and piano while performing live as a vocalist and guitarist. His debut album, Consacre Moi (2010), was recorded near Cincinnati with acclaimed American musicians and funded through the pioneering fan-supported platform Sellaband, marking the beginning of his independent creative journey.
Over the years, he has continued to evolve while maintaining full artistic independence. Albums such as Masque (2013), Longitudinal (2016), Fortunes (2019), and Enveloppe (2023) reflect his exploration of acoustic songwriting, refined pop textures, and emotionally charged atmospheres. Since 2018, he has also performed regularly in Montreal alongside respected Canadian musicians, further expanding his international presence.
With Test, Sylvain Zebo once again delivers a beautifully crafted and emotionally resonant piece of music—one that captures the subtle complexity of human experience through elegant melody and thoughtful production.
Test is available now on all major streaming platforms.
