Streaming services have warned that Canada’s new levy on their local revenues will force them to raise prices, and the impact is already being felt. According to the tech news website iPhone in Canada, Spotify has increased its subscription prices in Canada. The price hikes range from a 15% increase for individual plans, rising from $10.99 to $12.69, to a 24% jump for family plans, from $16.99 to $20.99.
But how much of this rise is directly tied to the new levy? Spotify has also raised prices in other countries for various reasons, including pressure from music rightsholders. For instance, in the US, Spotify increased the price of an individual subscription from $10.99 to $11.99 in June.

By comparing the Canadian increase to that in the US, it seems the levy accounts for roughly 70 cents of the rise in Canada—approximately $0.52 in US dollars, based on current exchange rates.
