School Disco – Happen: Brighton quartet School Disco return with the striking new single ‘Happen’ (September 10th via Krautpop!). A brooding, hypnotic example of the band’s blend of prog, psychedelic rock and krautrock, the single showcases some of the band’s most complete work to date.
Building their reputation for their live high-octane live shows which have seen the band open for Wolf Alice, Lime Garden and Froth, the band’s textural, experimental and musically rich sound shines bright on ‘Happen’.
Recorded at Farm Road Studios with engineering from Jake Smallwood alongside Rory Lethbridge himself, and mastered by Harry Hayes (School Disco, Roebucks), ‘Happen’ was born quickly — tracked live, with minimal overdubs, allowing its raw intensity to shine through. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Black Sabbath, CAN, and sci-fi and horror l the single finds the band in darker, more meditative territory while also drawing from a more tender personal place.
Lyrically sparse but emotionally weighty, the track moves with a sprawling fluidity – drifting through its floating verse, interwoven with splashes of fuzz heavy guitar and shifting time signatures before eventually reaching a relentless, angular instrumental break. Hypnotic guitar work, a palpable sense of creativity and a driving intensity allow the band’s musicality to shine.
As comparable to Meddle era Pink Floyd as it is to Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and King Crimson, the track highlights the sheer width of the band’s sound, and the restless creativity that drives them.
Vocalist, songwriter and guitarist Rory Lethbridge explains: “Happen was the first track written in a new batch of songs we had put together. The bones of it were written and recorded in a day while me and Harry were jamming at Studio Nunn. We wrote and recorded a song specifically for a show we were doing for Andy at Love Thy Neighbour.
He does a weekend of gigs normally in January called Triptych, and we were headlining one of the nights. What makes these nights fun is that he does a lathe cut for each night. We didn’t have anything we could use for it so we had to come up with something new. ‘Happen’ was that. It also felt like it was the line in the sand between Denton Rock and whatever we were going to do next the song changed a bit between the initial lathe cut and this version but it felt like the start of a new chapter”
Following a string of tastemaker radio and press support from the likes of BBC Radio 6 Music (New Music Fix), Radio X (X-Posure), Louder Than War, Backseat Mafia, Psychedelic Baby Magazine, Notion and Clunk, and having shared stages with Wolf Alice, Froth, Lime Garden, Population II (UK tour support), Bo Ningen (UK tour support), Dr. Feelgood and Frankie and the Witch Fingers, School Disco are only deepening their cult appeal.
‘Happen’ is the first glimpse into a new chapter – an ambitious first leap into more upcoming material that fuses heavy psych jams, expansive soundscapes, and progressive structures into a captivating and immersive sonic world.
