Dublin’s Runner release the vibrant debut single, ‘Distance’. Working with producer Dan Doherty (Mazzy Star, Fontaines DC, Jesus and The Mary Chain), Runner bring a rich tapestry of melodies and introspective lyricism over immersive guitar led soundscapes. Drawing inspiration from 70s rock icons like Rush and Pink Floyd whilst also citing the likes of Radiohead and Nirvana among their influences, the band capture a unique blend of the two worlds through their music.
Blending elements of nostalgic indie-rock with a driving and raw post-punk edge, ‘Distance’ is a brilliant example of the band’s sounds; effortless and raw, yet strikingly well formed. Growing through the verse which gradually introduces each guitar, bass and drums under the emotive yet understated lead vocals, the track bursts into a striking chord change as the chorus bursts the track into life through grunge guitar tones as the vocals lift into a deceptively catchy melody.
As comparable to Fontaines DC as it is to Joy Division and Oasis, the single captures a distinct 90s influence with a contemporary, atmospheric edge.
Speaking about the single, the band shared: “Recording this song was tough for us as a group as a lot of unneeded stress in our daily lives pushed the release out but we are very excited to show our other avenues of music that we can tap into, Distance is leaning more to our alternative and shoegazey sound which we want to show our listeners. Very excited for people to hear us getting a little more experimental.”
Having already gained early support for their debut single ‘View’ across the likes of Earmilk, Notion and Hot Press as well as being named RTE 2fm track of the week, Runner continue to showcase their potential.
The new single ‘Distance’ is due for release August 15th.
