Following the promising debut of Fly Away, award-winning actor, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Peter DiMaggio returns with Chasing a Trace, a heartfelt new single that further showcases his growing identity as a songwriter and recording artist. Released through independent label Passeri Records, the track serves as the second glimpse into an upcoming project that continues to blend intimate storytelling with rich, organic musicianship.
At its core, Chasing a Trace is a song about memory, longing, and the delicate balance between holding on and moving forward. Bittersweet yet ultimately hopeful, the track explores the emotional space we occupy when reflecting on people, experiences, or moments that once held great significance in our lives. Rather than dwelling in nostalgia, the song gently acknowledges the past while embracing the possibility of what comes next.
Musically, the single is beautifully crafted. Layered acoustic guitars form the foundation of the arrangement, while expressive slide guitar textures add warmth and emotional depth. A standout trumpet performance, reminiscent of the understated elegance of jazz legend Chet Baker, brings a wistful quality that perfectly complements the song’s reflective mood. Together, these elements create a rich sonic landscape that feels both timeless and deeply personal.
DiMaggio’s vocal delivery is equally compelling. His warm, conversational style draws listeners in immediately, creating a sense of intimacy that makes the song feel less like a performance and more like a personal conversation. While influences from artists such as Jack Johnson and Ethan Tasch can be heard in the song’s easygoing charm, DiMaggio’s voice and songwriting possess a distinct character that continues to emerge with each release.
Recorded and produced across Boston, Los Angeles, and various locations throughout Europe, Chasing a Trace represents an important milestone in DiMaggio’s evolving musical career. The collaborative process behind the track reflects the broad creative network he has cultivated while remaining true to the deeply personal emotions that inspired the song.
“This song lives in that space between holding on and letting go,” DiMaggio explains. “It’s about searching for pieces of something that once felt important, while learning to move forward with hope. Working with an incredible team across different cities and countries helped bring that feeling to life in a way I’m really proud of.”
Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, DiMaggio’s artistic journey has never been confined to a single discipline. A self-taught musician who plays piano, guitar, bass, ukulele, harmonica, and numerous other instruments, he has spent years building an impressive career across music, theatre, and film.
After studying at prestigious institutions including Interlochen Arts Academy, Boston University, and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, DiMaggio established himself as a respected performer within the theatre world. His work with companies such as SpeakEasy Stage Company, Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, Actors’ Shakespeare Project, Sh!t-faced Shakespeare, and Wheelock Family Theatre has earned critical acclaim, including an Elliot Norton Award for his performance in The SpongeBob Musical.
Currently, DiMaggio is starring in the regional premiere of Swept Away at Boston’s Calderwood Pavilion, stepping into a role originally created by Tony Award winner John Gallagher Jr. The production, based on the music of The Avett Brothers and inspired by their acclaimed album Mignonette, has received enthusiastic praise from audiences, critics, and even members of the band themselves.
His creative accomplishments extend beyond the stage. DiMaggio has appeared in award-winning short films including Shampoo (2024) and Dissection Day (2025), while also composing original music for theatrical productions and film projects such as Max’s House and The Fairy House.

As only the second release from Passeri Records and the second chapter in his unfolding musical story, Chasing a Trace offers another compelling look at an artist finding his voice through song. Thoughtful, sincere, and beautifully arranged, the single highlights DiMaggio’s ability to translate complex emotions into music that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable.
With Chasing a Trace, Peter DiMaggio continues to bridge his diverse artistic experiences into a singular creative vision, one built on authenticity, craftsmanship, and a genuine connection to storytelling.
