Dublin Jazz quintet Oceanna release their hotly anticipated self-titled debut EP, Oceanna (October 1st)
Blending rich cultural influences from their diverse lineup of musicians hailing from Ireland and Brazil, the band creates atmospheric and genre-defying music. Merging jazz with elements of psychedelia and atmospheric production, their sound brings together elements of traditional jazz with contemporary and experimental elements.
The five-track EP showcases the band’s versatility, with each song expressing distinct emotions while collectively creating a cohesive musical journey. Since their formation in 2022, Oceanna has drawn attention with energetic live performances and a unique, organic stage presence, quickly gaining a reputation for their dynamic sound. Across the self-titled release, the band delivers beautiful musicianship and inventive ideas. Swelling guitar tones, tight understated drums, grounding bass, twinkling keys and soaring trumpet come together to create music which is both strikingly compelling yet ethereal and transportive.
Speaking about the EP, Oceanna explain:
“Recorded over two different weekends in Black Mountain Studios, this EP shows interesting aspects of how Oceanna speaks the language of music. Each of the 5 songs expresses very distinct feelings/emotions and takes you in a deep dive into them – but also allows the listener to explore the elements that tie the piece together as a whole.”
Inspired by modern Nu-Jazz movement artists Kokoroko, Alfa Mist, Yussef Dayes, and others the band has developed a dynamic sound of their own that blends groove and lyrical melodies with the vast, delicately crafted, effects-driven soundscapes of guitarist Gabriel Bellator.
The band’s journey began with the release of their self-produced debut single Noir in 2022. This period culminated in Oceanna’s first headline show on February 4th, 2023 with support from Cuban-Irish artist Qbanaa. Since then, Oceanna has performed at renowned venues and festivals across Ireland, including All Together Now, Body & Soul, The Sugar Club, and The Complex. They have collaborated with rising Irish artists Qbanaa and JyellowL, and have opened for international artists including Ruby Waters, as part of her Spring Chicken Tour: Across The Pond, and Live on her European tour.
To celebrate the new EP, Oceanna will embark on an Irish tour, including a release party on October 12th at Bewley’s Café in Dublin. The self-titled EP is due for release October 1st.
