THE CARLISLE SESSIONS Floyds Row
SHARE

There is a quiet confidence running through The Carlisle Sessions that immediately sets Floyds Row apart. Rather than modernizing traditional folk music for the sake of wider appeal, the ensemble trusts the strength of the material itself, allowing centuries-old melodies and stories to speak with remarkable clarity. The result is an EP that feels authentic, immersive, and deeply rewarding from beginning to end.

What makes this release so compelling is the musicianship. Every arrangement is carefully balanced, with the violin, accordion, cittern, mandolin, viola da gamba, double bass, and percussion blending into a rich, cohesive sound. The performances never feel rushed or overly elaborate. Instead, each musician contributes with precision and sensitivity, creating an atmosphere where every note serves the story rather than competing for attention.

Emily Noël delivers one of the EP’s defining performances. Her expressive soprano is graceful without becoming theatrical, bringing warmth and sincerity to every lyric. She understands that folk music lives through its narratives, and her measured delivery allows each tale to unfold naturally, making every song feel personal and emotionally believable.

The production is equally impressive. Recorded with exceptional clarity, it preserves the organic character of live performance while allowing every instrument to retain its natural tone. This warmth gives the EP an inviting quality that perfectly complements its historical themes.

Perhaps the most memorable aspect of The Carlisle Sessions is its ability to transport listeners. Whether exploring traditional ballads, spirited dance tunes, or the beautifully crafted The Song Of Robin Hood & His Huntes-men, Floyds Row creates vivid musical landscapes filled with history, imagination, and timeless emotion.

Rating: 9.6/10

The Carlisle Sessions is a beautifully realized collection that proves traditional folk music remains as moving and relevant today as ever. Through exceptional performances, thoughtful arrangements, and a genuine respect for musical heritage, Floyds Row has crafted an EP that feels both historically rooted and refreshingly alive.
