DistroKid, a major DIY music distributor, plans to lay off 37 employees on November 2, affecting about 50% of its unionized workforce, including five of seven bargaining committee members. According to the DistroKid Union’s Instagram announcement, non-union employees remain unaffected.

DistroKid claims to handle 30-40% of all new music distribution, serving over 2 million artists globally. The layoffs are reportedly focused on the customer service team, with impacted roles potentially outsourced overseas.

A DistroKid spokesperson stated that the move aims to enhance artist support, enabling 24/7 customer service with faster response times. In their words, the company is committed to “delivering scalable, exceptional service” to maintain high-quality artist support.
