Acclaimed poet and storyteller Sophia Thakur takes a bold step into music with her stunning new single “My City.” After spending time between the UK and the US, a period filled with change and self-discovery, Sophia found the inspiration to explore a new artistic chapter and express her stories through sound.
Blending her love for alt-soul and indie R&B, “My City” is tender, reflective, and deeply personal. The song highlights Sophia’s poetic lyricism and warm, soulful vocals, paired beautifully with the delicate production by longtime collaborator Pat Cunningham. Together, they have created a stripped-back track that feels both intimate and timeless, like a quiet evening soundtrack for moments of reflection.
“This song was written during a time of huge change for me,” Sophia shares. “I felt a hunger for more, for new experiences, and to be surrounded by things that matched who I was becoming. ‘My City’ is the most honest I have been in a while. It is about moving from poetry into music, from one great love into another. The moment I wrote it, I knew how truthful it felt, every word, every note.”
Though “My City” marks Sophia’s first official solo release, her voice is already familiar to many. She has collaborated with Jacob Banks, Nao, Tiana Major9, and Limoblaze, and her captivating live performances have built a loyal following. Sophia has sold out shows at The Jazz Café, Bush Hall, Omeara, and The Lower Third, and graced iconic stages such as Glastonbury, Abbey Road Studios, The Royal Albert Hall, The Rockefeller Center, and TEDx.
Known for her ability to connect through words, Sophia blends poetry with jazz, neo-soul, and afrobeats to create music that feels both deeply human and beautifully universal. “My City” is more than a debut. It is the beginning of an exciting new chapter for an artist who continues to inspire, comfort, and remind us of the power of honesty in art.
