Rila’s Edge returns with the infectious indie-alt-rock fizzer ‘Undone’. Making their high-octane indie rock out of a box-sized studio room in Berkshire, Rila’s Edge have quickly developed a loyal cult fanbase, selling out headline shows and playing festival stages across the UK. The mismatched group of childhood friends and college mates (Alfie Harris, Ollie Hedin, Jacob Green, George Maclean and Charlie Kennedy) are natural collaborators and since making their debut in 2021 they have made their mark on the UK indie scene.
Produced by the bands now team of collaborators, Jordan Timms and Max Smith from Numen studio (VC Pines, and The Hunna), and Max Helyer (guitarist and songwriter for You Me At Six), the new single ‘Undone’ continues to cement the band as an exciting up and coming pop-rock talent. Built around a tight backdrop of boxy guitar tones and drums, the track opens with an understated sense of melancholy before bursting into its anthemic and evocative chorus.
The track grows throughout before reaching a pleasingly explosive middle eight where the track breaks down into a wall of fuzzy guitars and yearning vocals before ending on a climactic final chorus.
Speaking about the track, Ollie from the band explains:
“We wanted to capture the same energy as a track like ‘1979’ by The Smashing Pumpkins, but if early U2 recorded it.
The lyrics were written when I was suffering with depression and feelings of low self-worth. I had also just entered my first proper relationship and was completely in love. With those two events happening, I kept thinking about how people say ‘you need to love yourself before you can love someone else’. I felt like that statement didn’t ring true for me at the time and I hadn’t ever heard anyone dispute the saying before, so I decided to write about how love and low-self worth interact.
The verses are the inner reflections and the chorus is the expression of the reflection. Musically, I wanted the verses to sound like an old rock and roll track from the 50’s and then explode into a big, open, indie chorus.
We had a lot of fun recording this track and went a bit crazy using all of Max Helyer’s equipment to get mad delays and really crisp sounding guitars. The sonic compass of the band is starting to point more towards alt-rock with fuzzy grunge flourishes and we think this is a perfect track to start pushing in that direction.”
With two EPs under their belt, Rila’s Edge has created undeniable buzz, boasting plays on BBC Radio 1, Radio X, XS Manchester (RIP), Amazing Radio and Future Hits and a whole host of press support from the likes of Clash, Notion, Earmilk, Clunk, 1883 and Ones To Watch. Opening for the likes of Little Comets, The Hubbards, Courting, Sad Boys Club, Make Friends, The Zangwills, and Delights, Rila’s Edge have continued to sell out headline shows and in 2024 they drew in major crowds as the headliner at Wokingham Festival. Continuing to build a fanbase, the band has landed a number of editorials across Spotify including Fresh Finds Rock and gained over 280K streams to date.
