In keeping with her annual tradition, Piney Gir releases a light-hearted take on The Knife’s 2001 track ‘Reindeer’, out now.
Piney Gir is an artist who’s been performing for well over 20 years – with her solo output receiving radio airplay from numerous BBC 6Music DJs and being featured in the likes of The Independent, The Guardian, The Line of Best Fit, The Quietus, and DIY Magazine, she’s also played live internationally with Gaz Coombes’ and Noel Gallagher’s touring bands over the last few years.
As a Christmas lover, Piney Gir releases a new holiday song every year, and 2024 sees her releasing an appropriately cheerful take on a dark electronic track originally by Swedish duo The Knife. The band are now separated (with founding member Karin Dreijer enjoying solo success performing as Fever Ray), but their legacy lives on as demonstrated with this cover.Piney’s more upbeat version features her signature bittersweet vocal stylings as well as luscious strings for extra festive magic, with production overseen by Scritti Politti’s Rhodri Marsden – this track is a must for any Christmas playlist!
The single is lifted from the upcoming new compilation album from Lush Cosmetics, personally curated by co-founder and passionate music fan Mark Constantine. Entitled In The Bath, it continues the brand’s series of compilations featuring a vast range of covers by an amalgamation of under-the-radar artists, following previous instalments ‘Self Preservation Society’, ‘Instant Replay’ and ‘Life’s What You Make It’. The new collection of songs will be available on triple vinyl and download via Lush’s own label Cosmetic Warriors (distributed by Proper Music).
Compositions by artists as diverse as R.E.M, The Spice Girls, Celine Dion, Tracy Chapman, The Offspring and Depeche Mode have been reinterpreted by a galaxy of established and rising stars including Teddy Thompson, Eliza Carthy, Jackie Oates, Lady Maisery, Chisara Agor, Joshua Burnside, Stealing Sheep and Honeyfeet, many of which you’ll find on Lush’s bespoke Spa Treatment soundtracks. The result is a magnificently diverse, six-sided jewel of a record.
You would be hard pushed to pick up a Lush product that hadn’t been inspired in some part by music. You could say that music is one of their essential ingredients.
Interacting and working alongside musicians rather than just listening to them started with their Spa treatments. Music was to play an important role and become a central part of the therapy, creating the perfect soundtrack to massages, scrubs and soaks. All of Lush’s Spa treatments have bespoke soundtracks created by the ever expanding community of musicians who have become part of the Lush family.
