Norwich genre-blurring based rapper and producer $ebbuku, the brainchild of Sebastian Bates, returns with the radiant new single ‘Jackanory’ (October 9th). Written alongside producer ALINA, the single comes hot off the heels of the acclaimed ‘Affray’ EP, showcasing a track rooted in inventive production and live instrumentation.
Bringing together a soundscape of detuned piano, saxophone, crunchy swing heavy beats and grounding bass, ‘Jackanory’ carries a creative, alternative aura from the very first note. Opening with its infectiously catchy chorus, adorned with tasteful scratches and vocal cuts, the track slides into the verse as $ebbuku glides effortlessly between melodic vocals and his stylistic angsty yet chilled flow.
Holding an aura of old-school hip hop whilst retaining the biting post-punk edge which stylised earlier material, ‘Jackanory’ showcases not only a radiant example of $ebbuku’s artist evolution but also his radiant potential.
Speaking about the track, Seb explains: “Jackanory is quite simply my take on allowing yourself to let go of your past and not let the stories of your past define you. I speak a lot about my time living in Norwich, wanting to take my craft to the next level but in the process damaging myself for success.
It’s almost like I’m talking to myself, questioning if I’m ready to take the steps I need to grow as a young man whilst maintaining my career. Although the song has deep undertones, I also tried to keep my lighthearted attitude in the track, making jokes about my experiences and tales of madness with the band. In the end the track is all about growth and takes a new direction for my music.
Myself and Alina recorded the track at my home, playing and programming the instruments live. We took the approach of re-sampling all our own live recordings and record scratches which lead to a gripping hook of nostalgia in production and emotion. It was great to go down a more jazzy route compared to the heavy angst of my previous work, looking at modern Hip/Hop at a new angle.
A highlight is a recording of our first rehearsal as a band captured on VHS where Alina flips a coin and asks “Heads or tales?”. Of course I guess wrong and the coin gets flung in my direction which leads to an explosion of laughter. It holds a special place in my heart and shows that moving on and building such deep and joyful connections can push you much more than existing in your own world.”
Having made a name for himself on his local scene, $ebbuku (Sebastian Bates) has gained early support from the likes of BBC Introducing, Reprezent, DMY, Earmilk, Notion among others. Playing packed out shows across the East of the UK and at festivals including Brighten The Corners, $ebbuku has also performed live and been interviewed on BBC Local News.
Now back with more music ready to take things to the next level, $ebbuku continues to showcase the musicality, creativity and charisma that makes his music so special.
