Spinex Music recently had the pleasure of engaging in a conversation with the talented American multi-instrumentalist and songstress, Someya. In this insightful interview, the budding artist shared valuable insights into her musical career and offered a glimpse into her future endeavors.

Can you briefly introduce yourself?

Hi, I’m Someya. I’m an 18 year old singer/songwriter from California.

How Has Your Musical Career Evolved Over Time?

I’ve definitely grown a lot as an artist, as all artists should. I started writing songs when I was eleven years old about puppies and robots. I also participated in a lot of musical theater, jazz ensembles and choir. Now I write songs about relationships, heartbreak, travel, and love. My focus recently has been on recording my second EP, which includes a mixed repertoire of songs I have written over the past two years. I have been singing and performing a lot recently and I am excited to share my music with the world.

Your music video “Intoxicated” currently has 108,354 views on YouTube and “This flame” 105,058 views respectively. How does that make you feel?

I can’t even comprehend that that many people have seen my music videos and heard my songs! It’s pretty cool. It’s also quite terrifying because now there’s that many more people who can criticize my art if they wanted to! Luckily I have received a lot of positive feedback and I am very appreciative of that.

From your experience in the entertainment industry what advice could you offer to people looking to get where you are today?

I think it’s really important to work on your craft and get yourself out there as much as possible. If you’re a singer, sing all the time. Get lessons if you can. Sing different genres. Just sing and listen to yourself. Have an open mind so you can improve yourself. If you’re a songwriter, write all the time. If you’re a guitarist, practice! There’s so much competition in the industry, if you’re not good at your craft, you’ll be eaten alive.

Is there a particular song or musical passage that never fails to move you emotionally?

I find that music often moves me when I see it live. One time, I watched my favorite artist, Halsey, perform her entire first album, Badlands, in an intimate venue and I sobbed the entire time. The songs were really beautiful and it’s super surreal listening to songs you’ve heard for years being performed in that way. Hopefully, I’ll be able to do that for people as well.

What has been your biggest challenge as an artiste? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

I face different obstacles every day. A lot of them are mental. I am known to have an existential crisis every other week and part of that is me wondering to myself “who am I as an artist”, “how will I be perceived”, and “what good can I do for the world as a musician with the platform I’m building”. A big thing I’ve concluded is that it’s really important for me to be whatever feels true to myself. Hopefully I can inspire creativity, kindness and emotion in others along the way.

If you could blink your eyes and be in a favorite place right now, where would that place be?

Maybe a warm beach somewhere, but honestly, I just came back from a long trip. I went to many countries in Europe and it’s the first time I’ve ever been so far from home alone, so I’m really happy to be back home in California.

Do you have any upcoming project that you are currently working on? If yes! Can you tell us about it?

I just finished recording my second EP! I’m really proud of it. I started working with a new production team and we all connected really well on a creative and personal level. The songs I went in with are quite different from my previous music. The EP is an eclectic mix of songs that somehow fit together in an interesting way.

There’s a jazzy ballad, several rock influenced songs, alternative electro-pop inspired songs, and a couple soft chill songs as well, but everything surprisingly turned out quite cohesive. Recording it was really fun because I was really involved with the production, so it feels really me. We got to do some cool experimental things too, like sampling a stapler and weird horror movie sound effects. I loved the entire process of creating the EP and I’m super excited to share it with everyone.

Where would you like to find yourself in ten years from now?

Ideally, I will be making amazing music, painting, touring, traveling, and perhaps acting as well.

How would you describe your perfect day?

There are so many things that I love doing. Like, reading a book on a beach, going ice skating, spending time with family, going to a favorite artist’s concert (and being in the first row), watching a musical, writing music, performing for people, exploring a new city, jamming with other musicians, watching Harry Potter while drinking hot chocolate with my dad. Any of these are a perfect day for me.
