However, in his latest album, René fused music with storytelling, creating a one-of-a-kind “Documusical Xperience” that captures the essence of Omaha through both sound and narrative.
In this interview, Rene shares the inspiration behind his latest project, the role of his worldly travels in shaping his music, and the message he hopes to leave with fans.
Congratulations on the release of ‘2 Live in O-Ma-Haw; Lyvv in Omaha!’ What inspired or motivated you to create this album?
A couple of things in a nutshell. Being stranded in Central America during the beginning of the Pandemic. Not performing in my hometown in over three decades and , noticing changes in the city I grew up in.
You’re a Marine Corps veteran and an internationally acclaimed guitarist. How have those life experiences shaped your approach to music and storytelling?
The Marines not so much but, spending time in other countries has truly helped me to paint more vivid pictures through music
Your career has taken you to over 70 countries and across 42 states. How has traveling the world shaped your musical style and perspective?
That much travel gives a person a different lense, a different heart, a different awareness that cannot be attained any other way
Omaha holds a special place in your heart. Why was it important for you to make this city and its identity the centerpiece of your latest album?
Because no one knows the other side Omaha. Although I am not sure but, I don’t think anyone else was ever going to take on this task.
This album blends music and storytelling. Can you share how you approached combining these elements to create a “Documusical Xperience”?
The music I already had but, had barely touched on it live. Without planning it; I had songs that coincided with the direction I was going. Getting interviews was touch at times but, that is what makes it different. Hearing people’s perspective and, me having to go to archived information dating back to the early 1800’s and working my way to current day through various routes.
Beyond music, are there any personal or professional goals you’re currently pursuing?
No.
As someone with such a rich musical background, how do you continue to stay inspired and push boundaries with each new project?
I continually look for other artist that I like and, try to partner with them. I try not to stay too much in my little musical world. But, there is a time for that!!
You’ve worked with some incredible musicians and producers on this project. What was it like collaborating with Tim Zick, Aaron Sprinkle, and the rest of your team?
They are the reason that this record is being received so well. They put up with me and all of my quirks!! It all worked out for the best. We all need to have a team mentality.
Finally, what message do you hope to convey to your fans through your music, both with this album and your broader body of work?
If I could convey one thing it would be don’t be afraid to listen with ears and your eyes. That is it!!
