Jackie Minton is a singer-songwriter who embodies the heart and soul of indie music, blending authentic storytelling with a timeless sound. Influenced by legends like James Taylor and Taylor Swift, Jackie has carved out a unique niche that bridges folk sensibilities with a touch of classical finesse, thanks to her early years singing in choirs.

Since writing her first songs at the age of 11 and recording her debut EP at 18, Jackie has gone on to release four studio projects while navigating the challenges of indie artistry. Her latest album, Earnest Voice, showcases not only her dedication to truth and artistry but also her belief in the power of community to overcome obstacles.

In this interview, Jackie shares insights into her creative process, the themes that drive her music, and her vision for the future, including exciting plans to perform internationally. Her journey is a testament to resilience, passion, and the beauty of staying true to one’s voice.

Can you tell us about your journey as an indie musician? What inspired you to pursue a career in music?

I can’t imagine my life without writing music. I grew up listening to James Taylor and Taylor Swift, admittedly opposite ends of the musical spectrum, but both story tellers in their own right. I started writing around the age of 11 and recorded my first EP at 18. Over the years, I’ve released four studio projects and moved five times. The journey has not been something steady or always clear, but each experience has made me the artist I am today, and for that, I am grateful.

How would you describe your unique style and sound as an artist? What sets you apart from other musicians?

Style wise, I’d say I land somewhere between Taylor Swift and James Taylor, maybe with a more classical approach. I was raised singing in choirs, and there’s nothing I can do to hide it, ha!

Could you share some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as an indie musician and how you overcame them?

Recording my first full length album was quite the task. Crowdfunding was my full time job for a season. I’m grateful for the people that gave their support before the music came to be and that have been with me on the journey since! In releasing Earnest Voice, I learned that any challenges are best faced with community.

What is your creative process like? How do you approach songwriting and composing music?

Ideas come to me when I’m quiet, or maybe that’s just when I hear them. Making room for quiet is a hard thing to do these days. My process varies by season, but I’ve found the most consistent thing that works for me is making myself and my surroundings quiet enough to receive and consequently making time to see the song through to its end.

Are there any particular themes or messages that you aim to convey through your music? What inspires your lyrics?

For me, ideas tend to come from experiences. I can’t say there is one particular message I try to convey, but my highest aim is to tell the truth.

What are your long-term goals as an indie musician? Where do you see yourself and your music in the next few years?

I’ve learned that expectations are different then reality, and often for the better. A few of my goals for 2025 include finding new ways to share my music, recording a translation of a song in French, performing a few times in France since my move here, and recording another record. I have lofty aims, but I’m glad I don’t face them alone.
