San Jose – I’ve Got You: Glasgow theatrical post-punk poets, San Jose, share the new single, ‘I’ve Got You’ . Premiered on BBC Radio 6 Music, the single channels the chaotic energy of the band’s live performances while showcasing their ability to craft radiant, sprawling soundscapes.
Building a reputation as one of the most exciting live bands to come out of Scotland, the six-piece have quickly gained traction for their one-off performances which blend energetic live musicianship with theatrical performance art. Accompanied by a “mini-orchestral” backing, the band have sold out iconic venues such as King Tuts (a show which included the crucifixion of a man in a bear costume) and play multiple headline UK tours.
Capturing raw and expressive post-punk energy through sporadic, biting guitars, squeals of feedback, intense drums, and subtle choral backing, the Christopher McCrory (Walt Disco, Catholic Action, Joy Hotel, Flat Party) produced new single creates a frenzied, intense backdrop for the angsty, urgent vocals. Moving from the opening chorus into a lull of delirious, warping saxophone, the track soon erupts into another intense barrage of chantable noise.
Comparable to early Black Country, New Road and Cabbage, the track embodies a chaotic edge that propels it forward, balancing its abrasive, overbearing punk tones with its more nuanced delivery.
Speaking about the new single, the band explain:
“I’ve Got You is an unconventional love song at its heart. Instead of following a relationship person to person, we wanted to explore the slimiest depths of self-love, allowing it to realise and personify. Is there a moment of pleasure that goes too far, if so when and why?
We ultimately find ourselves in a brothel uniquely suited to ourselves, in each room lies empty, within exists only a mirror from which me must derive love. Confronting your own hedonistic desires is naturally uncomfortable and we wanted that to be represented in how the song sounds. Chris McCrory helped with this massively, keenly helping us walk the line between filth and flirtation alongside an ever expanding soundscape of spacial noises.“
San Jose’s ideology, that every show must be bigger and more rambunctious than the last and that the line between stage and crowd must be extinguished gives them a strikingly unique flair which is carried into their recordings. Merging visceral punk energy with moments of grandiose orchestration. Satirical, yet rooted in thoughtful, complex musicality and pointed social commentary, the band capture something strikingly unique and exciting.
San Jose’s ascent has been swift, with their unique sound and explosive stage presence capturing the attention of both fans and media outlets alike, gaining support from the likes of BBC Radio 6 Music,CLASH, Louder Than War, God Is In The TV, Notion, Ones To Watch and Glasgow World. The band has also graced stages alongside top names in the UK music scene, having opened for the likes of Gallus, Courting, Hotel Lux, and headlined Tenement Trail and selling out headlines across Glasgow including a stand out sell out at the iconic King Tuts. The band’s restless pursuit of musical experimentalism has seen them build a reputation as one to watch.
