Rodeo Terrorists return with Silent Sands, a singer-songwriter release that trades the project’s usual synths and loops for something quieter: piano, acoustic guitar and brushed drumkit, a deliberately minimalist turn for a band better known for squelchy electronics and techno-tinged experimentation.

The idea took shape while listening to a memorial service where the hymn Abide With Me was sung. Not a religious piece, it instead reaches for something universal, sitting with the unknowable rather than offering easy answers about what comes after life ends. The writing grew from a single image familiar from wartime documentary footage: the instant a landing craft’s bow door drops into the surf, and everything comes down to the singular task of making it up the beach, the split second in which fate decides who lives and who does not.

Real care was put into the lyrics’ structure and meaning, so they might resonate with anyone reflecting on the sacrifices made against fascism in the Second World War, while working as a timeless piece about remembrance, without sentimentality or religious framing. The accompanying video echoes this minimalism, AI-generated and, fittingly, devoid of any human figures.

On AI, they’re entirely upfront: lyrics and melodies are written by hand, then fed into the process and carefully curated, most of the output doesn’t make the cut, but occasionally something worthwhile emerges. Their take on the wider debate is simple, banning guitars never stopped anyone making music, and the first rock and roll band only became known as such once another act came along and copied its sound.

The project traces back to summer 2006 and a first Apple Mac, discovered alongside the simple pleasures of GarageBand. Earlier roots run through a 1970s childhood of scratched family LPs and dismantled electronics, a mid-80s spell singing in a choir and playing piano, bassoon, sequencers and a Yamaha DX-7, and a charity-shop drum machine find that turned them into full-time techno ravers, inspired by Kraftwerk, The Orb, KLF, Orbital, Joy Division and Depeche Mode among others. Earlier guises included Drago5, a techno DJ project, and indie outfit The Lady Marmalade.
