Can you tell us about your journey as an indie musician? What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
I started releasing music when I was 19, but I have been songwriting since I was 13 years old. I originally got into songwriting because of my parents. I told them I wanted to be a singer and they told me that I should try writing songs as well. I have been songwriting ever since. It’s now my favorite part of the entire music-making process! I originally started writing country music because that genre was really popular in my hometown, but when I went to college for songwriting, I started writing more indie-pop/folk music. I was really influenced by the other artists and songwriters I was co-writing with at the time!
How would you describe your unique style and sound as an artist? What sets you apart from other musicians?
Seeing as songwriting is my favorite part of the whole process, I am big on lyrics. I really want my lyrics to mean something and to create a visual story with the words I write. My sound is definitely indie-pop with a folk and americana influence. I love it when the music reflects and emphasizes the lyrics. Sometimes this means adding noises in the background of the song. For example, in my song “Greece,” there is the noise of an airport gate going through the entire thing as well as “party noise” that cuts in and out between the verses. The song is about starting
your life over in a completely new place. The lyrics talk about packing up, leaving, catching a flight, etc. So I wanted that energy to be incorporated into the song. I think this is one of the things that sets me apart from other artists.
Could you share some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as an indie musician and how you overcame them?
The hardest part about being an indie musician is getting people’s attention! It can be difficult to market yourself. Even though social media has some downsides, it is a great way for indie artists to market their music and gain traction. Social media has definitely been a way for me to overcome the difficulties of marketing myself and finding an audience.
What is your creative process like? How do you approach songwriting and composing music?
I almost always start with lyrics. Usually there is a melody attached to them, but sometimes it’s just words. I get inspired by all sorts of things – books, movies, tv shows, conversations with friends, my own personal life, etc. After writing the lyrics is when I figure out the general key and chord progression to the song. By that point I have a pretty good idea of how I want it to sound once it’s fully produced.
Are there any particular themes or messages that you aim to convey through your music? What inspires your lyrics?
A lot of my current music focuses on “fresh starts” because that is what I was looking for in my life when I wrote them. This idea is used in songs like “Greece” and “Cottage By The Sea” and unreleased songs like “Start All Over” which will be on my upcoming debut album.
Tell us about your latest project.
My debut album is coming out on July 21st 2023! I couldn’t be more excited. I wrote and produced all of the songs and I am ready for them to be out in the world.
What are your long-term goals as an indie musician? Where do you see yourself and your music in the next few years?-
I don’t like to focus too much on the future, but I want to continue to grow and evolve as an indie musician. Hopefully in the next few years I will have more albums out and I’ll be playing live shows. I would also like to collaborate with other artists and songwriters. My long-term goal as an indie musician is to be able to sustain myself as a musician
