Sleep Nation returns with a haunting new interpretation of the Hall & Oates classic “Maneater,” featuring Sisters Mann. Rather than attempting to recreate the driving energy of the original, the band takes the song into a darker, slower and more atmospheric space, giving its familiar lyrics a more intimate and melancholic weight.
The new version fits naturally within Sleep Nation’s dark acoustic approach to the Four Horsemen series, transforming a well-known classic into something that feels more restrained and shadowy. The arrangement allows the words to take center stage, revealing a different side of a song many listeners already know.
The idea began unexpectedly. “Maneater” was originally being developed as an original track intended for the EP when producer Jonn Nicholson noticed its striking resemblance to Daryl Hall and John Oates’ classic. Rather than moving away from the connection, Sleep Nation recognized that the song’s tone and subject matter worked naturally with the darker direction they were already exploring.
That realization led the band to embrace the song fully, bringing in Sisters Mann for guest vocals and reworking one of the original’s most recognizable musical elements. The iconic saxophone solo is replaced with viola, performed by Flight Attendant’s Nikki Christie, adding a more haunting and emotional texture to the arrangement.
Sleep Nation explains the creative turn:
“What originally began as an original track intended for the EP took a shift when our producer, Jonn Nicholson, pointed out its striking resemblance to Daryl Hall & John Oates’ ‘Maneater.’ That observation set the wheels in motion. Realizing the song’s tone and theme seamlessly aligned with our dark acoustic concept for the Four Horsemen series, we leaned into it — bringing in the Sisters Mann on guest vocals and swapping the iconic saxophone solo for viola, played by Flight Attendant’s Nikki Christie.”
With its smoky atmosphere, stripped-back approach and haunting vocal interplay, Sleep Nation’s “Maneater” offers a fresh perspective on a familiar song. The result is less about reproducing the energy of the original and more about uncovering the darker emotional space within it.
“Maneater” featuring Sisters Mann is available now, continuing Sleep Nation’s exploration of dark acoustic music through the Four Horsemen series.
