Sam Uctas – Redacted Lines: After a lifelong passion for guitar that began at the age of seven, Sam Uctas has unveiled their latest album, Redacted Lines. The album is a fusion of traditional songwriting and experimental soundscapes, recorded on vintage analog equipment, giving it a rich and textured sound that sets it apart from modern digital productions.
Sam’s journey as a guitarist started with classical training and shifted to electric guitar at 13, inspired by legends like Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Jeff Beck. This deep-rooted connection to the instrument remains central to their creative process. “All of my songs start with the guitar,” Sam explains. “Lyrics often follow or evolve from previously written poems.”
The album was recorded using 1980s TASCAM tape machines, emphasizing an organic and warm sound. Sam values the imperfections of analog recording, avoiding digital plugins in favor of hands-on shaping of each track with outboard compressors and equalizers. “Tape brings warmth and texture,” Sam says, contrasting its dynamic sound with what they describe as the lifelessness of digital production.
Redacted Lines seamlessly weaves accessible tracks like “Falling Out” and “In Your Eyes” with experimental pieces like “Everything Is Becoming” and “Everyday Is an Eternity,” which Sam describes as “noise paintings.” These compositions view sound as art, with time as a canvas and melody and rhythm as abstract colors.
Lyrically, the album is heavily influenced by Beat Generation icons such as Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. The poetic nature of Sam’s songwriting ensures that the lyrics stand alone as poetry, blending literary sophistication with musical expression.
