Give it a GO! is Mariana Bell’s album, and she says it comes from a clear idea of what she wanted to hear first. She describes it as something built for listeners to dig into, with layers, nuance, joy and fun, and says the record stayed true to that concept from the start of writing through recording.
The album looks back to the girl with heartthrob posters from romcoms on the moodboard in a 13 year old bedroom in the late 80s and early 90s, then filters that feeling through a mature songwriter with a modern sensibility. Bell says she had never had such clarity in putting something together before, and that even the trickier subjects only stayed in if they could fit the overall concept and joyful mood.
Moonless Night (feat. Emily Herndon) is the focus track. Bell says it was inspired by Wilson Phillips and is about all the little moments of light that come from understanding the dark. A Mess is another key song on the release, holding Bell’s inner life alongside the world at large, with climate change, political strife juxtaposed with a newfound love and inner joy, all sitting together in the same song. She calls it “a bop.”
The whole record is tuned to A432, sitting lower than the standard A440 used on most radio and streaming releases. After forming bands in New York and Los Angeles, Bell has settled into her current groove with Virginia locals, with acoustic guitar and vocals at the centre and a wider group adding guitars, keys, drums, bass, horns, violin, sax and multi-layered backing vocals.
She has made 8 studio releases, and she has showcased at SXSW, NXNE, FloydFest and others over the years. Bell has also been a folk artist who has hit the dance charts, and she has written her own songs since age 14.
