Dream pop artists Jordan Whitlock and Matt Bauer of Memory Spells come together for their first full length collaboration, This Is What It Feels Like. The album is the result of a creative partnership built almost entirely from afar, with Whitlock working out of San Diego and Bauer based in Los Angeles. Interestingly, the two only met in person after completing more than half of the record, giving the project a sense of emotional closeness shaped through physical distance.
That dynamic sits at the heart of the album. This Is What It Feels Like explores the quiet, defining moments that shape human relationships, from longing and uncertainty to deep connection. Tracks move through different emotional spaces, whether it is the reflective tone of “Do You Think of It Sometimes,” the devotion expressed in “All I See Is You,” or the slow, unfolding calm of “Bloom.”
Sonically, the album leans into soft, immersive textures. Airy synths, subtle guitar lines, vintage drum machines, and layered strings create a sound that feels both expansive and intimate. Whitlock’s vocals float through these arrangements with a sense of openness and vulnerability, blending naturally with the dreamlike production to create something that feels personal yet distant at the same time.
The project stands as a reflection of what collaboration can become when built on trust and shared vision. Despite the miles between them, Whitlock and Bauer found a common language through music, shaping a record that feels cohesive and emotionally grounded.
Music publicist Danielle Holian of Decent Music PR describes the album as a rare kind of intimacy, highlighting how it captures the space between longing and connection while turning distance into part of the story itself.
