Canadian jazz vocalist and songwriter Heather Ferguson brings the energy of a live jazz session to her new five-track EP, Jammin’ Under Jack. Recorded at Piano Bar Soho in London, beneath the historic Jack Solomons Club, the release captures the chemistry, spontaneity and intimacy that make live jazz so special.
Recorded in just four hours on a summer afternoon, the EP brings together jazz standards, original songs and moments of improvisation. Moving between romantic melodies, gospel-influenced grooves and more energetic arrangements, Ferguson showcases her versatility while staying connected to the traditions that have shaped her music.
The recording process was deliberately kept simple. Ferguson and her musicians performed together in the same room, recording live rather than building the songs through layers of studio production. This approach preserves the natural interaction between the performers, allowing the music to develop through instinct, timing and the shared energy of the session.
The setting adds another layer to the release. Recorded beneath one of London’s well-known historic music venues, Jammin’ Under Jack carries the atmosphere of Soho’s live music scene. Across its five tracks and 24 minutes, the EP offers a snapshot of musicians responding to one another in real time, with the occasional surprise that makes a live performance memorable.
The tracklist opens with ‘North Star’, an original song written by Ferguson and Attila Fias, before moving into ‘Never, Never, Never’, a jazz interpretation of the Italian classic ‘Grande Grande Grande’. ‘Save Your Love for Me’ and ‘Charade’ bring familiar songs into the session, while an alternate version of ‘North Star’ offers another take on Ferguson’s own material.
Ferguson is joined by music director and pianist Nathan Britton, bassist Oscar Ho and drummer Jamie Murray. Jazz arrangements by Dr. Tony Genge help shape the material, while engineer Jake Hatch captured the London session. Wynn Gogol handled the final production and mastering in Victoria, Canada.
Ferguson’s musical journey has continued to develop through years of dedication to her craft. Her catalogue includes two full-length albums and several standalone singles, with a sound that balances respect for jazz tradition with personal expression. Rather than simply revisiting familiar styles, she brings her own perspective to the music, drawing on lived experience and a growing confidence as a performer and songwriter.
Jammin’ Under Jack is part of that continuing evolution. Ferguson is currently working on a third album, expected in 2027, featuring primarily original material with her Victoria-based band. A separate project exploring the music of Duke Ellington is planned for 2028.
She also has live performances planned across British Columbia, including shows at Hotel Rialto in Victoria, Central Saanich Church in Saanichton and The Coda in Victoria. Further performances are planned into 2027, while Ferguson and her band are exploring opportunities to bring their music to the UK. A possible run of UK shows in spring 2027 is under consideration, although dates have not yet been confirmed.
For listeners who appreciate the connection between musicians, the freedom of improvisation and the timeless appeal of jazz, Jammin’ Under Jack offers an inviting listening experience. It captures Heather Ferguson and her band doing what live music does best: sharing a room, responding to the moment and letting the songs take their own shape.
