Born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, Patti’s musical journey began at just seven years old when she first sat behind a piano. Although she stepped away from the recording studio for many years, music never stopped being part of her life.
A life-changing moment came after watching the documentary Immediate Family, reigniting her desire to create again. That decision led to an extraordinary collaboration with legendary bassist Lee Sklar, producer Tariqh Akoni, and a remarkable group of world-class musicians who helped bring Dance Again to life. The result is an album filled with hope, resilience, and the joy of embracing new beginnings.
In this exclusive interview with Spinex Music, Patti reflects on her remarkable comeback, the inspiration behind Dance Again, the unforgettable collaborations that shaped the album, and why she believes dreams truly have no expiration date.
For readers discovering your music for the first time, can you introduce yourself and share your musical journey from Tucson, Arizona, to becoming the artist you are today?
Well, that’s a long story! But I can summarize it by saying that music has always been a part of my life. I began playing piano when I was seven years old, and I’ve been writing and performing since I was a teenager. I’ve traveled around quite a bit, performing, producing, making records. And after a long break from the studio, I’m back!
You have returned with Dance Again, your first new album in twenty years. What emotions did you experience while creating and finally releasing this record?
It was pure joy. I knew I missed recording, but I didn’t realize just how much. I felt ready and excited to be back in the creative process.
The title Dance Again feels symbolic. What does it represent in this chapter of your life and career?
Taking chances, never giving up on the things you really want, and continuing to put things out into the world. Even if you know you might fail. That’s what life is all about.
There was a long break between your previous recordings and this new album. What inspired you to step back into the studio after two decades?
I was inspired after watching the documentary Immediate Family. I guess the timing was right for me to watch a film about all of the music that made me want to make music in the first place. After watching it, I knew my break from the studio was over.
You have described watching Immediate Family as a turning point. Can you tell us more about that moment and why it reignited your passion for recording?
I stepped way from recording, but music never left my life. Watching that film made me want to jump back into it in a real way. I knew I wanted to return, but I wanted to do things differently this time, and I have. it’s been far more rewarding, and much more successful, and I’m grateful for that!
Reaching out to legendary bassist Lee Sklar ultimately changed the course of this project. What was your reaction when he responded and agreed to listen to your music?
Shocked and thrilled! It changed the course of my life.
The album was produced by Tariqh Akoni and features an incredible lineup of musicians. What was it like collaborating with such respected artists and how did they help shape the sound of Dance Again?
Their level of musicianship and mastery of their craft brings out the very best in me every time I play with them. I am at my best when I play with people who are at their best.
You have enjoyed sold-out shows and attracted a new generation of listeners during this comeback. What has it been like connecting with both longtime fans and new audiences?
Amazing. Having an audience of listeners who are really enjoying the music is remarkable at any stage of a musician’s career. I could not ask for more than that.
As a songwriter, where did you draw inspiration from when writing the songs on Dance Again? Are there any tracks that hold a particularly special meaning for you?
Some are older songs I finally finished, and many are new. The title track is my favorite, because it truly is about the whole experience of making this album and returning to my life in music.

She’d be delighted. And I think she’d be proud, because I didn’t stop creating and I didn’t give up.
Beyond music, you also earned a law degree and built a successful career as a commercial jingle singer. How have these experiences influenced your perspective as an artist?
Absolutely. Every experience I have had has informed my art. I can’t imagine not taking every road I took along this journey, because each one contributed to me as an artist and as a human being.
Your story is a powerful reminder that dreams do not have an expiration date. What message would you like to share with people who may feel it is too late to pursue their passions?
That is the message! Dreams don’t have an expiration date, and life is worth living when we keep trying, creating, taking risks, and growing.
Throughout your career, what has been the biggest lesson that music has taught you about resilience, creativity, and believing in yourself?
I always say that I love making music, but sharing it is the true joy for me. I think that is also true about my life. I like to connect, I believe in growth, and I know that my life in music reflects the overall picture of my life. Learning, trying, failing, questioning, and reaching people. I would only regret not taking a chance on something I really want to do. Even if I fall flat on my face, I tried. That’s true in music and it’s true in life.

More music, more shows, more connection. I’m just getting started!
