Kailaya’s journey in creating “Montenegro For The Summer” is a testament to her artistic vision and dedication. Working closely with her producer, Aubren Elaine, she has crafted a track that fuses Afrobeat grooves with an island vibe, offering listeners a sense of escapism and joy. The song was inspired by a serene moment in Montenegro, where a simple guitar loop sparked the creative process.

In this interview, Kailaya shares her experiences and insights behind the making of “Montenegro For The Summer.” She opens up about the inspiration she found while traveling, her multicultural influences, and the message she hopes to convey through her music. Kailaya also gives us a glimpse into her future projects, including new music videos, a full album, and an exciting clothing line collaboration.

Join us as we delve into the creative world of Kailaya, exploring her musical influences, her approach to balancing personal life and career, and the routines that keep her grounded. Congratulations on the release of “Montenegro For The Summer”! How does it feel to share this new song with your fans, and what does this release signify for you personally and professionally?

It feels really amazing. I am super proud of this release because me and my producer, Aubren Elaine, worked hard to incorporate other genre inspirations and most importantly cultures. We wanted to create a fusion of genres mainly focusing on an Afrobeat groove and building from there to create more of the island feel.

You mentioned finding inspiration from a guitar groove in Montenegro. Could you share more about that experience and how it shaped the creation of “Montenegro For The Summer”?

I was looking through Splice for some guitar loops since I didn’t have my guitar with me while traveling and I heard this loop while driving on a beautiful mountain road and staring at the most stunning view of the water. It was so peaceful and so I kept trying to play around with some melodies and words but all I heard was the first verse. I think by the last week I found a little bit of the pre as well. It wasn’t until I landed home that I finished the song and heard the chorus as well!

“Montenegro For The Summer” carries a message of escapism and cherishing moments of joy. How do you hope listeners will connect with this message through your music?

I hope it will make them laugh and want to dance. The track plays around with the idea that leaving the country is all you gotta do to solve your problems (obviously not the case), but maaaan it can definitely help sometimes to take a break.

As an American-Ukrainian artist, how has your multicultural background shaped your approach to music and storytelling? Are there specific cultural influences that resonate in your work?

Incorporating my other cultures is so important to me. It teaches more people about where I come from and honestly, even though I was born in LA, I feel more at home whenever I was in Ukraine. I wrote a Russian verse in one of the songs in my album that is currently in production.

What’s next for Kailaya after the release of “Montenegro For The Summer”? Are there any future projects or collaborations on the horizon that you’re excited about?

So much is coming! I am riding the high of performing at the Troubadour a few nights ago. I am currently working on two music video concepts along with a full album of 10 songs. So stay tuned for more releases this year! I am also starting a clothing line with my best friend that is going to be my merch going forward as well.

As an artist, how do you navigate the balance between staying true to your artistic vision and meeting the expectations of your audience and industry trends?

I balance it by staying true to my artistry and letting that find the right audience for me.

Who are some of your musical influences and inspirations? How have they impacted your style and sound over the years?

Neo-soul really inspires me. Erika Badu and Sade. The first artists I fell in love with once I started songwriting were Snoh Aalegra and Leon Bridges.

How do you find the balance between your personal life and your career as a musician?

I don’t fully know yet, honestly. All I can think about is music, writing and dance. I haven’t fully found a balance.

Are there any routines or practices that help you stay grounded amidst the demands of the industry?

Meditation and journaling. It sounds cliche but it works. I always journal before a big show and/or opportunity.

Looking back on your journey so far, what have been some of the most rewarding moments or achievements in your career?

I think the past week I had both of my highlights which were releasing ‘Montenegro for the Summer’ and performing at the Troubadour the night after.
