Guordan Banks, a classic yet free-spirited artist, has made waves in the music industry with his soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics. Hailing from a family rich in musical talent, including a jazz-singer grandmother and an organist grandfather, Banks could sing in key before he could walk. His impressive journey has seen him pen songs for iconic artists like John Legend, Kanye West, and Keyshia Cole, describing these experiences as pure magic.
Determined to support music industry workers, he founded the Mirror Musicians Fund (MMF). Despite achieving the #1 spot on Billboard as an independent artist, Banks remains grounded, inspired by his faith and driven by a desire to give back. His story is one of talent, perseverance, and a deep commitment to his craft and community.
How would you describe yourself?
Classic but still free spirited.
What motivated you to start up the “Mirror Musicians Fund (MMF)”?
After reviewing the qualifications for other relief fund programs for the music industry workers, I knew most folks would not qualify. I was inspired to create this fund for the working musicians, tech workers and others that are very important in the creative process.
Tell me a little bit about how you first got into making music?
My family is full of singers. I could sing in key before I could walk. Lol. My grandmother was a jazz singer and my grandfather played the organ.
How was the experience like penning for John Legend, Kanye West and Keyshia?
Aww it was pure magic. I felt like I was supposed to be in the room. They all have a lot of vision! I learned so much from working with them.
You featured Chris Brown in “Keep You in Mind” remix. How was it like working with him?
Chris is mad fun to work with! Actually, Bryson Tiller is the reason why Chris Brown is on KEEP YOU IN MIND! He was on it first sent it to CB. He later asked to come off the song.
Prior to now you made it to the number one spot on Billboard. How was the feeling like becoming the first Independent R&B artist to reach that spot?
It felt unreal because we had no idea it was even possible to be an independent artist and achieve #1 on the charts. For so long we were kept out the #1 spot, but we never quit. God is never going to let you fail when you put him 1st. That’s what I learned most about that experience.
What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
I really couldn’t say…lol maybe a lawyer.
“Keep You in Mind” was selected for President Obama’s Valentine’s Playlist before now. How was your reaction like when you heard about this?
It was insane! I couldn’t believe it… so many people could’ve had that moment. I was super thankful.
Do you have any artist that you are currently working with on any music project and what should we expect from you anytime soon?
I’ve been doing hooks lately. I want to get back into the hip-hop space a bit. I have some cool surprises in the bag
If you had one message to give to your fans what would that be?
Never let the devil see you cry. Keep your head up in the face of adversity because, it won’t be the last time you have to face it. Be one with God and love yourself remember he made you in his image.
