Singer-songwriter Chris Pannella has released his deeply personal new single, “Holdin On,” an emotional tribute inspired by the loss of one of his closest friends. The inspiration behind “Holdin On” comes from a life-changing experience that forever altered Pannella’s perspective. In October 2021, after spending several weeks focused on a demanding new job, he reunited with his close friend, Thomas. The pair spent time together in Colorado, talking about life, their dreams, philosophy, and everything they hoped the future would bring.
Just a few days later, on October 13, 2021, which also happened to be Pannella’s birthday, tragedy struck.
That morning began like any birthday, with messages from friends and loved ones, including a birthday text from Thomas. Expecting his friend to arrive so they could celebrate together, Pannella waited. But Thomas never came.
Instead, he received a devastating phone call informing him that Thomas had suffered a fatal heart attack while at work.
“I couldn’t process it at first,” Pannella recalls. “I kept reading his birthday message over and over again. I was the last person in our group of friends to see him alive. It sent shockwaves through all of us.”
What was supposed to be a joyful day quickly became one of unimaginable grief. Thomas was remembered by everyone who knew him for his kindness, authenticity, and unwavering support of those around him.
For Pannella, the loss carried even deeper meaning.
“Thomas was one of the biggest supporters of my music,” he says. “Back then, I wasn’t even singing yet, even though he always encouraged me to. I didn’t finally take that step until last year.”
That encouragement continues to inspire him today.
Reflecting on the experience, Pannella admits that losing someone who truly understands you leaves a permanent mark.
“It’s incredibly painful to lose someone who understood you. Every October 13, I find myself thinking about that day.”
With “Holdin On,” Pannella transforms those emotions into a touching tribute for anyone who has experienced loss. Rather than focusing solely on heartbreak, the song celebrates the enduring presence of cherished memories and the people who continue to influence our lives long after they’re gone.
“This is a song for the people we’ve lost,” he explains. “It’s for those who changed the direction of your life, for the friendships that never fade, and for the memories that stay with us forever.”
Although Thomas never had the chance to hear the finished song, Pannella believes he would have been proud of it.
“Even though my friend will never get to hear it, I know he would have loved it.”
