For years, Chris Arthur stood just outside the spotlight, close enough to feel its warmth but never quite convinced he belonged in it. Behind the scenes, he quietly carried the question of whether he would ever find the courage to step forward and claim his place as an artist.

Thrown into a period of heartbreak and survival, Arthur discovered that the instinct he had always relied on to process pain, search for meaning, and make sense of difficult experiences was songwriting. The songs began arriving rapidly, almost uncontrollably. Without initially intending to release them, he started recording simple voice memos and sending them to a few close friends. One of those friends quickly recognized that something significant was taking shape.

That collection of deeply personal songs would eventually become Underneath The Scar, Arthur’s debut album, arriving August 6, 2026.

Produced, recorded, and mixed by Eric Sanderson, co-founder and multi-instrumentalist of acclaimed New York band Augustines, the album represents a powerful collaboration built on more than music. Arthur and Sanderson have been friends for more than 25 years, with their relationship developing through Arthur’s work as Tour Manager for Sanderson’s former band Pela and continuing through various capacities during Augustines’ rise between 2011 and 2016. Arthur also appeared in Todd Howe’s award-winning documentary Rise: The Story of Augustines, which chronicled the band’s remarkable journey.

Sanderson believed in Arthur’s songs at a time when Arthur was struggling to believe in himself. Battling self-doubt and imposter syndrome while navigating the aftermath of heartbreak, Arthur needed an environment where vulnerability was not something to hide but something to embrace. The trust between the two gave him the freedom to make an album without worrying about whether he belonged in the room.

Arthur describes the writing process as feeling like “bailing water out of me so I wouldn’t drown,” an image that perfectly captures the urgency behind the record. Rather than reorganizing the material into a conventional narrative, Arthur preserved the order in which the songs were written. The result is an album that functions almost like an emotional diary, documenting the progression from the collapse of a relationship through grief, reflection, resilience, and eventually hope.

The journey begins with the first single, “All That Glitters Isn’t Gold,” before gradually moving through the complicated emotional terrain that follows heartbreak. As the album develops, Arthur’s personal experiences begin to feel increasingly universal. His story becomes a mirror, allowing listeners to recognize their own losses, doubts, mistakes, and moments of recovery within the songs.

Musically, Underneath The Scar is grounded in acoustic-driven songwriting and organic performances. Rather than chasing perfection or production excess, Arthur allows the emotional core of each song to remain visible. The arrangements serve the stories, giving the songwriting room to breathe and ensuring that the vulnerability at the heart of the album never gets lost.

That approach also gives the project a sense of purpose in an era increasingly dominated by individual tracks, playlists, and short-form content. Underneath The Scar makes a case for the album as a complete emotional experience. Its ten songs are chapters in one larger story, each contributing to a portrait of a person learning how to live with what has happened while gradually finding the confidence to move forward.

Originally from Buffalo, New York, and now based in Southern California, Chris Arthur has spent much of his career working around music rather than standing at its center. With Underneath The Scar, he finally steps through that curtain.

What emerges is not simply a debut album, but the sound of someone confronting his own fears and discovering that the scars left by difficult experiences can become part of the story rather than the end of it. Arthur turns heartbreak into songwriting, uncertainty into expression, and personal healing into something listeners can share.

Underneath The Scar is ultimately an album about surviving what changes you, finding meaning in what remains, and discovering that sometimes the most honest stories are the ones we are most afraid to tell.
