Chicago-based, Chinese-born artist Cassandra Liu announces her debut single “Chaos Is Me,” a dark synth-pop track that sets the tone for album Madison Boulevard.
Written, produced, and recorded entirely by Liu, the track channels a conversation with a friend into something bigger: the idea that chaos is not something to be escaped but inhabited. Drawing on the classical Chinese philosophical concept of Zhuangzi’s Butterfly Dream, Liu turns an abstract meditation on existence into a visceral, club-ready statement.
The track has been described as having “a prominent dark pop base cultivated into atmospheric sensibilities with webs of conceptual electronica and immense vocal depth.” Lost in the Manor noted that it “develops into a fierce and magnificent soundscape,” with vocals that “add dynamism and elevate the song’s appeal to soaring heights.”
The accompanying music video, directed by NYU graduate Matan Hamam, extends the song’s themes into an abstract visual piece featuring choreography and costume design sourced entirely through Liu’s own network in an extremely ambitious piece of work.
Liu says of the track, “We are so insignificant compared to how grand the universe is, but we are everything to our cells, molecules, and thoughts that make up who we are.”
‘Chaos Is Me’ is out now.
