Los Angeles-based experimental electronic artist Tommy Simpson returns with a bold and thought-provoking new release under his Macro/micro project. Titled A.fter I.ntelligence, the concept album is an introspective journey into artificial intelligence, consciousness, and the possible future of humanity in an increasingly technology-driven world.
Built on a foundation of IDM and experimental electronic music, the album continues Macro/micro’s mission of exploring what Simpson describes as the relationship between “inner and outer space.” Through intricate sound design and immersive electronic textures, the project examines complex ideas with a deeply human perspective, embracing both uncertainty and introspection in search of understanding and clarity.
Music has been a lifelong pursuit for Simpson. He began studying multiple instruments at the age of five and was already writing and recording original music by the time he was thirteen. Over the years, he has released several albums and EPs as Macro/micro while also composing for film, contemporary theater productions, and large-scale art installations. His work has reached audiences around the world, earning him recognition as a unique and forward-thinking voice in experimental electronic composition.
With A.fter I.ntelligence, Simpson moves beyond surface-level conversations about artificial intelligence and instead focuses on the deeper philosophical, ethical, and existential questions surrounding its rapid development. The album asks difficult but increasingly relevant questions: What happens when intelligence grows beyond human intention? How do we define consciousness in an age of intelligent machines? And what becomes of humanity when the systems it creates begin to outgrow it?
The album’s cinematic depth and sonic precision are also informed by Simpson’s professional experience as an audio engineer for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross from January 2019 to July 2021. During that period, he contributed to acclaimed projects including HBO’s Watchmen, the films Waves, Mank, and Soul, as well as releases by Nine Inch Nails and Halsey.
With A.fter I.ntelligence, Macro/micro delivers more than an electronic album. It is an immersive and philosophical work that invites listeners to reflect on technology, consciousness, and the uncertain future that lies ahead.
