New York-based newcomer Camryn Quinlan shares the vibrant and heartfelt new single ‘ex box’ (Jan 31st), the latest single to be taken from the upcoming debut EP If We’re Being Honest (planned for 14th March).
Showcasing her most commercial minded songwriting to date, ‘ex box’ brings a more electronic-pop sound to reflect against the rootsy nature of previous releases, but crucially retains the soulful, heartfelt songwriting that characterises Camryn as an artist.
Produced by longtime collaborator Baldvin Hlynsson, ‘ex box’ brings a Warming blend of electronic elements and organic instrumentation which is both understated yet strikingly cinematic. With a hooky chorus to die for with relatable lyricism that carries a story of teenage heartache.
Camryn’s introspective, heartfelt and ever relatable lyricism shines bright throughout the track. Speaking about the track, Camryn explains:
“The meaning behind “ex box”, is as simple as keeping things that are left behind from exes. The box of cards, gifts, jewelry, movie tickets, and other sentiments that came from that special person. It’s almost like keeping those physical memories, kept the person in your life.
I made the song when I was starting freshman year of high school, and I was just writing in my bed one day, thinking about the box that I had in my room. It was finally recorded three years later when I met my Icelandic producer Baldvin. He flew from Iceland to New York for us to work together and then the song was all put together. It’s crazy how these things happen.”
Having built a strong following (215k on instagram, 46k on Tik Tok) gigging across New York, the still teenage singer-songwriter showcases her strikingly complete sound, despite being only her second official release.
The upcoming EP If We’re Being Honest promises a collection of songs that are both lyrically profound and musically rich as Camryn showcases her strikingly complete sound, drawing inspiration from a diverse range of artists including Taylor Swift, Kacey Musgraves, and Chappell Roan.
Following the success of her radiant and emotive debut ‘Hourglass’ which gained acclaim across the likes of Earmilk, 1883, Fame Magazine, Lock Magazine and Atwood, Camryn is building on her already feverish following, putting her first studio releases out into the world. With live performances across New York including highlights at Rockwood Music Hall and BMI Showcase at Rockwood, Camryn is well already established as one to watch.
