Whimsy and the Bee will release History on October 2, a full-length album that brings together songs written over 14 years by songwriter and frontman Chris Connors. Revisiting and expanding on material first introduced on the band’s debut live EP, The Rest, the album connects years of songwriting through a deeply personal story of uncertainty, change and acceptance.

Blending indie-folk, alternative and art-pop, History combines thoughtful lyrics with unconventional rhythms, unusual chord progressions and arrangements that gradually unfold. Acoustic and bass guitars provide the foundation, while piano and violin add texture and atmosphere. The music moves between more rhythmic passages and expansive soundscapes, giving each song room to develop.

The album’s story begins with “Back to the Start,” a song shaped by powerlessness, distress and the desire for peace despite circumstances beyond one’s control. It closes with “Alive or Dead (I Don’t Give a Snip),” which represents a shift toward acceptance, gratitude and contentment. The songs between them trace the journey from struggling to control life’s uncertainties to learning to live with them.

Connors’ writing moves between observations about society, personal relationships and moments of reflection. Some lyrics take the form of stories told from the outside, while others feel like personal thoughts unfolding in real time. The songs leave space for listeners to interpret their meaning and connect them to their own experiences.

One of the album’s central moments is “Buddha in a Bonnet,” which explores the unsettling possibility that what people believe about reality may not be the whole picture. Rather than presenting uncertainty as something to fear, Connors considers it an invitation to see life as something bigger and more beautiful than expected. The song encourages listeners to loosen their grip on certainty and remain open to the world around them.

“Young Fish” draws on Connors’ experience living in Nashville, where he struggled with the pressure to shape his music around the commercial industry’s expectations. Through an allegorical story, the song considers the challenge of staying true to one’s identity while navigating outside demands, a theme that extends beyond music into everyday life.

Near the album’s conclusion, “Beyond the Noise” offers a quieter moment of reflection. Written by Kendra Connors, the song resonated so strongly with Chris that he encouraged her to record it for the album. Its placement immediately before the closing track gives listeners a moment to pause and take in the journey before reaching the record’s final destination.

The story behind History began during a period of change in Connors’ life. After pursuing independent music since the mid-2000s under several names, he stepped away from releasing music for seven years. During that time, he returned to songs that had originally been written separately. Revisiting the material revealed a shared personal thread that had not been obvious when the songs were first created.

With encouragement from his wife and collaborator, Kendra, Connors began bringing the songs back to life. The process first led to The Rest and now continues with History. Together, the releases also complete a seven-album conceptual series, following six earlier albums released under Connors’ solo project, Spirit of the Void.

For History, songs previously heard on The Rest were reworked with a full band. Violinist Lexi Bergan and bassist Timothy Krohn Jr. joined Chris and Kendra for several months of rehearsals, during which the group developed the arrangements collectively. The instrumental parts were recorded in December 2025 before being sent to Nashville-based drummer and percussionist Joe Morin.

After delays during mixing, the band returned to Jay Condiotti, who had recorded The Rest, to complete the album’s final mix. History was self-recorded at The Spofford and Oak Recording Room, mixed by Condiotti at Jay Bones Musicland and mastered by Stephen PettyJohn at Ethereal Mastering.

With its blend of indie-folk, alternative and art-pop, History brings together years of songwriting in a record about letting go, reconsidering long-held beliefs and finding peace in the face of uncertainty. Although the songs come from Connors’ own experiences, their themes leave room for listeners to discover their own stories within the album.

    About Whimsy and the bee

Whimsy and the Bee sets inquisitive lyrics to unique rhythms and chord structures, with long-form songs that tend to evolve and bloom, leading the listener through groovy grooves to ambient soundscapes and beyond.

Chris’ lyrics feel meaningful and relatable yet mysterious, and come from a deep place of reflection upon society and personal relationships. The songs are told through third-person story and first-person stream of consciousness.

The acoustic and bass guitar hold abstract chord patterns and riffs while the piano and violin sail circles through them.
