“Runways (Sunset Remix)” transforms a story about long-distance love into something much broader about movement, freedom, possibility, and new beginnings. What does the idea of a “runway” represent to you personally, and how did you want the Afro House remix to change the emotional perspective of the original song?
To me, a runway initially represented stepping into the unknown — leaving our fears behind, trusting ourselves, and finding the courage to move forward even when we don’t know exactly where the next chapter will lead.
With Runways (Sunset Remix), that metaphor has now soared into something broader, while still preserving the essence of the original song and its roots in long-distance love. The original came from the intimacy of missing someone across miles, time zones, and changing horizons. The remix opens that emotion into something freer and more expansive — new doors opening, new horizons appearing, and new possibilities unfolding.
How have the different cultures you’ve lived in shaped your understanding of identity and connection?
I think growing up between cultures taught me early that belonging doesn’t have to come from one geographical place.
Being a world citizen has shaped me culturally, musically, and emotionally. People may speak, celebrate, and express love differently, but the emotions beneath those differences are universal.
That naturally finds its way into my songwriting. I’m drawn to where cultures meet – Arabic textures, Indian influences, Western pop, and Spanish or French phrases can all coexist if they serve the emotion of the song.
For me, identity is less about fitting into one box and more about allowing all those influences to become part of one voice.
You move comfortably between English, Spanish, French, Arabic, and Indian influences in your music. What determines which language belongs in a particular song, and how does changing languages affect the emotion, melody, rhythm, or storytelling of what you are trying to communicate?
It depends on the feel and the sonic world of the song I’m creating. I don’t choose a language simply to make a song multilingual — it has to belong naturally within that world.
Each language carries its own rhythm, texture, and emotion. Spanish can bring warmth and movement, French can feel intimate or cinematic, while Arabic and Indian influences bring their own melodic character and cultural depth.
Sometimes the melody itself leads me toward a particular language because the syllables and phrasing sit differently within the music. For me, language becomes another textured layer in the song; adding color, emotion, and character while still serving the story.
Your catalog moves across cinematic pop, pop-rock, electronic music, Afro House, jazz, soul, blues, and global sounds. Rather than limiting yourself to one genre, you seem to allow the story to determine the musical direction. How do you decide what sound a particular story needs, and is there a common artistic thread that connects all these seemingly different styles?
For me, the story always comes first. I tend to hear the emotional and sonic world of a song before I think about genre, what kind of atmosphere, energy, instrumentation, or space the story needs.
Some songs naturally call for guitars and a rawer pop-rock sound, while others need the openness of electronic music, the movement of Afro House, or the intimacy of jazz and soul. I don’t want genre to dictate the story; I want the story to shape the sound.
The common thread across all of it is emotion, melody, and storytelling. My sound may move across genres and cultures, but I think the artistic voice connecting them remains the same.
There is a strong connection between music and visual storytelling throughout your work, which is perhaps unsurprising given your background as an interior designer as well as a musician. Do you experience music visually when you write or produce? When you create a song, do you already imagine its colours, spaces, landscapes, characters, or cinematic world before the production is complete?
Yes, my background in interior design naturally shapes how I experience music — through space, texture, color, contrast, and movement.
Often, I can already see the visual world of a song while I’m writing it: its atmosphere, landscape, or even its color palette. Those images can then influence the production and the way I eventually present the song visually.
For me, creating music is much like designing a space. Every element has a purpose, and together they create a world the listener can step into and feel.
Your song “Sketches on the Walls” carries a powerful message about refusing to let other people’s perceptions define you and choosing to “color” your life authentically. As someone who works across multiple creative disciplines and cultures, have you ever felt pressured to fit into someone else’s idea of who you should be, and how has learning to trust your own identity affected your artistry?
Absolutely! As artists, we’re constantly surrounded by opinions about what we should sound like, how we should present ourselves, or which direction we should take.
Sketches on the Walls came from that tension between external perception and inner truth. Over time, I’ve learned that trusting my own identity doesn’t mean rejecting advice: it means knowing what aligns with my creative vision.
That has given me greater clarity as an artist. I’m more interested in building a body of work that reflects my own perspective than fitting into a predefined idea of what an artist should be.
From your debut EP Got My Mojo to later releases such as Under a Blazing Sun, Sketches on the Walls, and now Runways (Sunset Remix), there is a noticeable evolution in both your sound and your confidence as an artist. Looking back at your earlier work, what have you learned about yourself creatively, and what parts of your original artistic identity remain essential to who Seema is today?
Looking back, I think I’ve become more confident in trusting my instincts and allowing each song to find its own world.
Earlier on, I was exploring what my voice could hold. Over time, I’ve become much more intentional about songwriting, production, sonic direction, and the complete identity around a release. I’m also far more comfortable moving across genres and cultures without feeling the need to define myself too narrowly.
You have received international radio support across the UK, US, France, Spain and other territories, while also becoming a finalist in the International Singer Songwriters Association Awards and receiving a Berklee College of Music Aspire Scholarship. How has international recognition affected your confidence and ambitions, and does receiving attention from different parts of the world change the way you think about the audience you are creating music for?
International recognition has been incredibly encouraging, particularly as an independent artist. Hearing my music played on radio across different countries reminds me that a song can travel far beyond where it was created and connect with people, I may never have imagined reaching.
The Berklee chapter was meaningful and rewarding in a different way — it reinforced the importance of continuing to learn, challenge myself, and grow as a musician. Recognition is affirming, but for me, growth remains just as important.
It has definitely expanded my ambitions, but it hasn’t changed who I create for. I don’t think of my audience in terms of one country or demographic. I think about whether the emotion in the music can travel and if someone, somewhere, can connect with it.
What has remained constant is my love for melody, storytelling, cultural texture, and emotional connection. Those elements have always been at the core of my artistry, even as the sound around them continues to evolve.
“Runways (Sunset Remix)” carries an uplifting, atmospheric quality that feels naturally connected to travel, sunsets, open roads, and stepping into the unknown. What role does movement play in your own life and creativity? Do you think constantly experiencing new places and perspectives has made you more comfortable with uncertainty and change?
Movement has always been a part of my life – across places, cultures, creative disciplines, and in shaping different chapters of who I am.
Travel continually shifts our perspective. It makes me think and observe differently, absorb new sounds, landscapes, people, and ways of living, and all of that inevitably finds its way into my creativity.
I think it has also taught me to be more open to change and the unknown. You don’t always know exactly where something will lead, creatively or personally, but sometimes you have to trust the direction and keep moving forward. In many ways, that is the spirit of Runways itself.
Looking toward the future, what kind of artistic world do you want Seema Farswani to build? Beyond streams, radio plays, awards, and international recognition, what do you hope someone feels or understands after spending time with your music, and what legacy would you like to leave as an artist who believes that creativity, culture, music, and design can all become different languages for the same human connection?
I want to build an artistic world where music, culture, language, and visual storytelling can coexist naturally without boundaries or the need to fit into one particular box.
Beyond recognition, which I’m eternally grateful for, I hope people connect with the emotion behind the music and connect to their own story within it — whether that is love, courage, freedom, resilience, or simply the confidence to keep evolving.
Ultimately, I would love my body of work to reflect connection across cultures and creative disciplines. Music, design, language, and visual storytelling may be different forms of expression, but to me, they all speak to the same thing: our shared human experience.
As you continue evolving as an artist, what excites you most about the next chapter of your music, and are there new sounds, collaborations, or creative territories you’re looking forward to exploring?
What excites me most is the freedom to keep evolving without knowing exactly where each song will lead. I’m increasingly drawn to creating from the ground up – allowing the story, melody, and emotion to shape the production rather than beginning with a fixed genre in mind.
I’m looking forward to exploring more live instrumentation, global textures, cross-cultural collaborations, and new ways of bringing my visual and musical worlds together.
For me, the next chapter is really about discovery while continuing to challenge myself creatively and staying connected to the storytelling, melody, and human emotion that have always been at the heart of my music.
If you could leave listeners with one thought after hearing Runways (Sunset Remix), what would you want it to be?
I’d want them to feel that stepping into the unknown can also be an invitation to possibility. We all have our own runways – moments when we have to leave something familiar behind, trust ourselves, and move toward a horizon we can’t fully see yet.
For me, Runways (Sunset Remix) is ultimately about carrying love with you while having the courage to take off — opening yourself to new doors, new horizons, and whatever possibilities may be waiting beyond them.
